The School of Agriculture, Food and Wine is offering an exciting opportunity for a leader in Food Science and Nutrition to join our academic team. The appointee will lead development of innovative undergraduate courses in Food Science to equip future generations of learners with the knowledge and skills required for industry and society. In this rare continuing teaching and research role, the appointee will also have the opportunity to develop research projects of such a scope and scale that ensures trans-disciplinary collaboration across research groups as well as significant industry and government engagement. Doctoral researcher

The newly founded research group Human-Centered Security at the Computer Science Department at Aalto University is looking to hire at least one PhD Student (Doctoral Researcher). You will be supervised by Assistant Professor Dr. Verena Distler (https://www.aalto.fi/en/people/verena-distler).

The research group focuses on exploring the challenges people encounter related to security and privacy when interacting with technology. Our objectives are to understand how people experience security and privacy challenges, and to design and evaluate effective solutions (incl. technological interventions). Our work is human-centered and grounded in empirical research. We draw on methods from various disciplines—including human-computer interaction, social sciences, and computer science—to deepen our understanding of these challenges.

Your network and team

You will be affiliated with the Department of Computer Science at Aalto University. Alongside your supervisor, you will work closely with other researchers within your group. While strong independent working skills are essential, the ability to collaborate effectively with fellow researchers is equally important.

Your role and goals

You will work in the interdisciplinary field of human-computer interaction, focusing on questions relating to human-centered security. Your tasks will include:


	Conceptualizing and conducting rigorous empirical studies (both quantitative and qualitative).
	Conducting quantitative and qualitative data analysis.
	Developing and testing new interaction concepts with an attention to detail (low- and high-fidelity prototypes).
	Writing and publishing research articles in leading scientific venues.
	Presenting your work at scientific conferences.
	Collaborating with other researchers in the group.


In addition to research work, persons hired are expected to participate in teaching following the standard practices at the department.

Your experience and ambitions


	Completed Master studies in the fields of computer science, psychology or related disciplines.
	You have a strong interest in psychological and social aspects of human-centered security and privacy.
	You have a strong interest in scientific research and good problem-solving skills.
	You have excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. Other languages may be beneficial.
	Some experience with conducting research studies, data analysis, and scientific writing is beneficial (e.g., in the master thesis).
	Empathy allows you to put yourself in the shoes of your research participants.
	Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

The position belongs to the Aalto career system and the selected person will be appointed for a two-year fixed term appointment with an option for two-year renewal.

The starting salary for the position is 2747,07 EUR per month. In addition to the salary, the contract includes occupational health benefits, and Finland has a comprehensive social security system. The annual total workload of research and teaching staff at Aalto University is 1 612 hours. The position is located at the Aalto University Otaniemi campus.

About the research group:

The research group "Physics of Nanostructured Materials" (PNM) studies the fundamental physics of novel materials such as graphene and other 2D materials in the context of atomic-scale structural manipulation using electron and ion irradiation combining experimental materials physics, atomic-resolution (scanning) transmission electron microscopy, single-atom spectroscopy, and computational physics.

Job description:

We are looking for a motivated and talented individual to join the group as a prae-doctoral researcher. The position offers an excellent opportunity to participate in leading the research field together with national and international collaborators. The research project related to this position will be defined together with the successful candidate, but will be related to defect-engineering of 2D materials for quantum applications, and their study using advanced 4DSTEM-based imaging methods, high energy-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy and in situ optical spectroscopy. A part of the project will be associated with the FWF cluster of excellence "Materials for Energy Conversion and Storage".

Extent of employment: 30 hours/week
The employment duration is 3 years and 1.5 months. Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended if the employer does not terminate it within the first 12 months by submitting a non-extension declaration. Occupation group in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 Grundstufe (praedoc). After three years of employment, the salary increases according to the collective bargaining agreement.

Key responsibilities:

You actively participate in research, teaching & administration, which means:


	You are involved in research related to atomic-scale structural manipulation of low-dimensional materials using electron and ion irradiation combining experimental materials physics, atomic-resolution transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy, and in publishing the results in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
	You will carry out independent experimental and/or computational work, including data analysis and preparation of results for publication.
	You are expected to sign a doctoral thesis agreement within 12-18 months and to finish your thesis within the period of the working contract (three years and six weeks).
	You engage in teaching (independently and/or in a team) within the scope of the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement.
	You may occasionally be involved in the organization of meetings, conferences and symposiums.
	You take on administrative tasks in research, teaching and administration.


Your qualifications:


	Completed Master's degree or Diploma in physics or a related field.
	Basic experience in academic writing.
	Hands-on experience with atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (including 4DSTEM) and/or preparation of 2D materials are of advantage.
	Hands-on experience with preparation of free-standing 2D material samples and/or experience with low-energy ion irradiation is an advantage.
	Basic skills in scientific programming are expected, and good skills in Python and transmission electron microscopy image simulations are an advantage.
	Excellent command of written and spoken English (C1 Level or equivalent).
	Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
	Good communication skills and ability to present research findings effectively.
	Didactic experience is an advantage.
