The Free University of Berlin was founded in 1948, in the turmoil of post-war Germany, when students of the former Universität Unter den Linden, then located in the Soviet sector of the city, were facing persecution because of their views. With international support, the Free University was established, allowing scholars to pursue their teaching and learning without political interference.
Truth, justice and freedom remain the university’s core values with these words imprinted on the university seal.
In the 1960s, the university was the site of several student protests and demonstrations. In 1990, German reunification brought about changes in the management of the university, and, with it, came a newfound focus on research. Today, it is one of only eleven designated ‘German Universities of Excellence’.
Set in the leafy suburb of Dahlem in southwest Berlin, the university is home to more than 32,000 students and offers over 150 degree programmes. It has 17 collaborative research centres, an academic staff of almost 5,000 and partnerships with universities the world over, as well as seven international liaison offices in Beijing, Brussels, Cairo, Moscow, New Delhi, New York, and Sao Paulo.
The university also boasts five Nobel Prize winners among its staff and 17 winners of the Leibniz Prize. With women employed in 30 per cent of its professorships, the university is also at the forefront of German higher education institutions when it comes to gender representation.
Over the years, the Free University of Berlin has hosted many influential figures, including President John F. Kennedy who chose it as the location to deliver his ‘Ich bin ein Berliner’ speech in 1963.

We are now looking for a professor to lead ship hydrodynamics field at Aalto University’s Marine and Arctic Technology group. In this position you will have a chance to make an impact by changing the way the field is defined in terms of research and education in the era of increasing computational resources and data, sustainability goals, and design of previously unseen ship and ship system concepts. The research within the position focuses especially on understanding, predicting, and controlling the complex, unsteady dynamic phenomena and hydrodynamic forces associated with the interactions of ships with the ocean environment. The position will contribute to hydrodynamics which equips our graduates for the future marine engineering paradigms, such as climate change and green transition. Your role and goals Your role will be to develop and share expertise on understanding and managing ship motions and loads in real operating conditions throughout the lifecycle of a ship. This is essential for safer, more energy-efficient ships: Current design practices often rely on simplified assumptions that misrepresent the lifetime environmental loads, which affects the performance, structural safety, energy system sizing, and operability of the ship. Ideally, your research will integrate experiments, theory, and simulation in a physics-first manner, directly informing ship design and operations. We expect you to: Advance research to improve the prediction and performance of calm-water resistance, hydrodynamic loads, motions, and added resistance, using targeted experiments, full-scale operational data, and both high-fidelity and reduced-order models. Build a team and secure research in the field of hydrodynamics by acquiring relevant resources from various sources for applied and fundamental research (such as Research Council of Finland, Business Finland, Horizon Europe). Teach on marine hydrostatics and hydrodynamics in ways that connect theory with model- and full-scale experiments and numerical methods for seakeeping, wave loads, and added resistance, while embedding themes of climate adaptation, decarbonization and ship design. Teaching will also cover participation to B.Sc. and M.Sc. level courses and thesis supervision at all levels. Commit to the Aalto Ice and Wave Tank and conduct research and teaching in this internationally unique facility. We also expect from you further development of the facility. Your experience and ambitions The candidate is expected to build a versatile team that advances fundamental understanding, theoretical and numerical approaches, and the use of applied methods in ship hydrodynamics by combining model- and full-scale data. They should be able to teach foundational and state-of-the-art approaches and help to grow the hydrodynamics ecosystem of Aalto in collaboration with industry, authorities, and international partners. Candidates must hold a D.Sc. or PhD and have a successful postdoctoral or equivalent research or industrial track record. This role supports applied food processing research projects with strong industry relevance, focusing on product development, process optimization, and project management. Key Responsibilities Lead and manage applied food processing related research projects in collaboration with Principal Investigators, Co-PIs, and industry partners. Lead applied research on mushroom-, mycelium-, and plant‑based (PB) protein ingredients, with emphasis on improving nutrition, flavour, digestibility, and techno‑functional performance. Design and execute physicochemical and biological processing strategies for protein enhancement, including thermal (UHT, ohmic heating), non‑thermal (ultrasound, high‑pressure homogenisation, microwave, pulsed electric fields), and solvent‑shifting approaches (pH and salt shifting). Evaluate and integrate green processing technologies, including deep eutectic solvents, for protein extraction, off‑taste reduction, and sustainability‑driven process optimisation. Lead the process design for scale-up fractionation and separation from bench-top, to pilot plant scale production involving centrifugation, clarification, recovery and separation of supernatant, and drying process. Support AI‑enabled data analysis, including collaboration on Artificial Neural Networks and Gaussian Process modelling, to accelerate processing optimisation. Consolidate experimental, techno‑economic, and sustainability data into robust technical evidence packages for project reporting, stakeholder engagement, and regulatory or translational decision‑making. Coordinate project timelines, milestones, budgets, procurement of consumables and equipment, and compliance with grant and institutional requirements.
