The Federal University of Alagoas (or the Universidade Federal de Alagoas in Portuguese or UFAL) is a federal institution of higher education founded in 1961. Located in the city of Maceió, in the coastal state of Alagoas, the Federal University of Alagoas is one of the main research centers in the Brazilian north eastern region (which is one of the five regions of Brazil). UFAL has around 26,000 students enrolled in 84 degree courses and employs 1,700 technical and administrative staff and 1,400 teachers, of whom 690 have doctoral degrees. It has a total of 258 research groups, 1,125 lines of research and 3,646 researchers among the teachers, technicians and students. The main teaching languages are Portuguese and English. The University has 50 international agreements with higher education institutions around the world, with participation in partnerships including Erasmus Mundus, Rede Galileu and Science without Borders. The university is located near the city’s airport, Zumbi dos Palmares International, which operates both national and international flights. Maceió is the capital city of the state of Alagoas, which is on the east coast of Brazil. The name "Maceió" is an Indigenous term for a spring. Known for its beauty, it is a picturesque combination of palm trees, mangroves and bright green sea, with a historical centre of pastel-coloured colonial houses and a 19th Century cathedral. Its vibrant culture is reflected in its arts and crafts, cuisine and customs and like, many locations in northeastern Brazil, it is largely built upon the boom of the sugar industry in the 16th Century.

Job Description DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS Research Assistant Professor (25260668) Responsibilities: The Department is recruiting a scholar at the rank of Research Assistant Professor in the areas of multiple scattering waves and acoustic, optical forces to support the on-going development of relevant research areas within the department and the university. Requirements: Applicants should have worked at a university or research institute on a full-time basis for not less than 1 year. They should also have (i) a relevant PhD degree; (ii) strong commitment to excellence in research and mentoring/teaching; and (iii) outstanding accomplishments and research potential in the related area. The candidates with relevant postdoctoral research experiences will be considered with priority. The applicants are expected to have experience and publication records in two or more of following research areas: Multiple scattering of waves Acoustic or optical force The initial appointment will be offered on a fixed-term contract up to two years commencing May 2026. This role sits within a growing multidisciplinary team and will involve working closely with a small group of engineers and researchers to deliver secure, scalable cloud infrastructure that enables safe access to sensitive healthcare and research data. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining Microsoft Azure-based infrastructure, ensuring that the SDE meets stringent security, governance, and compliance requirements associated with clinical research. The role requires experience with cloud platforms, infrastructure as code, and modern DevOps practices, alongside an understanding of networking, monitoring, and system reliability. The primary role involves developing and validating Hydrodynamic models to study performance of integrated floating breakwater and marine renewable energy. Responsibilities include calibrating simulations with experimental/numerical data, performance analysis, and contributing to interdisciplinary research on coastal protection, with an emphasis on delivering accurate and impactful modeling insights. Key Responsibilities Participate in and manage the research project with Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI and the research team members to ensure all project deliverables are met. Undertake these responsibilities in the project: 1. Wave Stochastic Analysis and Hydrodynamics  Conduct advanced stochastic analysis of wave environments to evaluate the performance of floating structures.  Analyze hydrodynamic behavior of floating breakwaters under varied sea conditions. 2. Hydrodynamic and Fluid Structure Interaction Modeling Perform Hydrodynamic simulations to optimize the design and performance of floating breakwaters. Develop models for stability assessment, structural integrity, and dynamic response of floating systems. 3. Connector Design Design and analyze mechanical connectors for the integration of multi-purpose floating breakwater systems, ensuring structural stability and durability. 4. Design and Integration Develop innovative designs for floating breakwaters that integrate wave energy converters (WECs) and, tidal energy systems. Optimize design configurations to maximize energy harnessing and wave attenuation. 5. Experimental Testing Plan and conduct physical model tests in wave basin to validate computational models. Analyze experimental data to improve and validate the floating breakwater design. 6. Research Documentation and Dissemination: Prepare technical reports, research papers, and presentations to disseminate findings to academic and industry stakeholders. Contribute to project proposals and progress updates for funding agencies. Carry out Risk Assessment, and ensure compliance with Work, Safety and Health Regulations. 7. Project Management Support: Ensure timely execution of project milestones Coordinate with external collaborators and manage data-sharing protocols. Work independently, as well as within a team, to ensure proper operation and maintenance of equipment. The employee is to communicate with any relevant internal or external stakeholders to ensure project deliverables are met. Any other adhoc duties assigned by supervisor. Job Requirements PhD/Master’s in Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related field.
