As the largest faculty within HKU, we have the School of Biomedical Sciences, School of Chinese Medicine, School of Clinical Medicine, School of Nursing, School of Public Health, and the Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacy. We also host the School of Biomedical Engineering, a cross-faculty academic endeavour. The Faculty comprises around 320 full-time, highly-qualified teaching staff and 1,600 research and research-related personnel, alongside honorary teachers who are mostly doctors and medical professionals in public hospitals or private practitioners. Currently, there are approximately 3,500 undergraduate and 2,200 postgraduate students in our student body. The Position We are seeking distinguished scholars with proven record of excellence in research, teaching, knowledge exchange, along with a strong commitment and managerial competence to support the Faculty’s expanding research portfolio and clinical and teaching activities. The appointees are expected to play a key role in leading the respective School in achieving the highest standard of quality in all aspects of its teaching and learning, research and scholarship, and professional engagement programmes, fostering academic collaboration within and outside the Faculty/University, and pursuing new strategic directions for the further development of the School. The Person Director of the School of Chinese Medicine Applicants should possess the following: a recognized undergraduate degree in Chinese Medicine registrable with the Chinese Medicine Council of Hong Kong and a Ph.D. degree in Chinese Medicine or related fields; a distinguished track record of research and scholarship in the field of Chinese Medicine; substantial experience in teaching in tertiary institution(s); substantial practicing experience; evidence of international recognition for scholarship and professional expertise; a track record of community engagement; an understanding of the East Asia context, particularly Hong Kong and Chinese Mainland; and proficiency in both Chinese and English. Director of the School of Nursing Applicants should possess the following: a primary nursing qualification registrable with the local Nursing Council or an equivalent international regulator, and a Ph.D. degree, preferably in Nursing or other healthcare-related disciplines; a distinguished and sustained record of high-quality impactful research, as indicated by publications and competitive grants, with substantial practicing experience; evidence of international recognition for scholarship and professional expertise; proven excellence in teaching and learning and/or knowledge exchange, services and administration; and demonstrated administrative leadership and management experience in universities or healthcare settings. What We Offer The successful candidates should possess the stature of a Full Professor at a research-intensive institution. Appointment as Tenure-track Clinical Professor/Professor and Director of the respective School will be made, to commence as soon as possible, on a five-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance. Exceptionally outstanding candidates may be considered for appointment with the Chair Professor title and/or on tenure terms. Re-appointment to the headship will be subject to the University's established procedures. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary. A monthly cash allowance will be offered to the successful candidates. The Woebken group investigates the survival strategies of soil microorganisms and environmental conditions that allow for their resuscitation and activity. A particular focus lays on drylands, where soil microorganisms must endure long periods of drought, interrupted by unpredictable and very short phases of hydration via rain or other water sources. Dormancy – a state of reduced metabolic activity – has long been regarded as a prerequisite for desert soil microorganisms to survive such drought periods. However, as dormancy cannot be sustained indefinitely, phases of resuscitation must also play an important role for long-term survival of desert soil microorganisms and thus for maintaining microbial diversity in one of the harshest environments on the planet. The contract for this position is limited to 6 years. Your future tasks: This postdoctoral position will be associated with projects in which we study the capability of desert soil microbial communities to utilize different water sources for reactivation and their associated microbial activities. This is achieved by combining genome-resolved metatranscriptomics, single-cell activity assays (e.g. a recently developed heavy water-NanoSIMS assay) and process measurements with the goal to relate the obtained data to the ecosystem level. This postdoctoral position centers on identifying the role of different water sources for the survival of microorganisms and thus for the maintenance of microbial diversity and function by setting up longterm experiments with differing hydration regimes. By applying the above-mentioned toolbox, the postdoctoral researcher will be assessing the consequences on microbial community composition and activities. These experiments will also include the effects of changes in the hydration regimes due to predicted climate change scenarios. The position provides the opportunity for the candidate to be creative and innovative, and to work in a diverse, dynamic and interdisciplinary team – the Woebken group, together with national and international collaboration partners. This is part of your profile: PhD degree in microbiology / biological sciences. A background in microbial ecology with experimental or fieldwork experience. Comprehensive understanding of microbial physiology. Bioinformatics skills such as working knowledge of R and scripting languages, as well as a solid knowledge of statistical data analysis.
