ESLSCA University was established in 1949 in France. In the 1960s, this original ESLSCA began to internationalise its degrees and develop global partners. By the 1990s, ESLSCA was offering graduate degree courses in Egypt.
Today, ESLSCA University offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses through its school of business administration and school of computing and digital technology.
ESLSCA has four city campuses, in Cairo, Giza and Alexandria. Its headquarters is in the picturesquely named Pyramid Heights, in Giza (which is famed for its pyramids). These campuses are all deliberately city-based, in order to provide students with easy access to the university’s corporate partners.
The university prioritises social impact, and encourages students to volunteer or work with non-profit organisations outside the classroom.
Students are also invited to join a range of extracurricular societies, ranging from the arts-based – including theatre, fashion and carving – to the sporting. Those students looking to acquire leadership skills can run awareness campaigns or organise campus events, such as concerts.

As a PhD student (university assistant or prae doc in the Austrian university system), you will work for the ERC project ‘The anthropology of the future: an art world perspective’ (ANTHROFUTURE) led by Prof. Manuela Ciotti (Principal investigator, PI). The project is based at the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology.

As part of the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology not only brings together renowned scientists and students, but also different research areas, a variety of ethnographic methods, a large number of outstanding research projects and appreciative collegial exchange.

ANTHROFUTURE focuses on the art world as an interlocked digital and physical system as an ethnographic site. The project uses innovative multimodal methodologies to generate analytical and theoretical advancements on the future as a time-zone in its comparative and political dimensions across the regional contexts under analysis.

As part of the ANTHROFUTURE team, you will carry out an ethnography of the digital-physical art world infrastructure with a focus on art fairs. In particular, the candidate will conduct research online and in person at Art Basel (Basel, Hong Kong, Qatar) and Art Dubai among others.

The employment duration is 3 years (36 months). Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to 3 years if the employer does not terminate it within the first 12 months by submitting a declaration of non-extension. Your future tasks:

You take on tasks in research, teaching and administration to support the project ANTHROFUTURE and will be expected to:


	Finalize your dissertation agreement within 12 months
	Work on your dissertation and its completion within 3 years
	Carry out research in full compliance of ethics, data- and best-practice ERC research guidelines (you will receive support in doing that)
	Develop and deliver high-quality, innovative research outcomes on the topic of the research project
	Participate in conferences of appropriate learned societes and associations
	Produce research publications for leading international and/or peer reviewed journals and book chapters for ANTHROFUTURE
	Produce research dissemination materials for the project´s public facing website and social media
	Assist in exhibition projects (both physical and digital)
	Work with the project administrator to ensure that they have the information and materials they need to effect the smooth running of the case study and the wider ANTHROFUTURE project
	Work closely with the PI and the other members of the ANTHROFUTURE research team to assist in research and outcome delivery, and other tasks as agreed with the PI

About us

The UK Dementia Research Institute (DRI) Centre is comprised of 7 groups and is embedded within the Department of Basic and Clinical Neuroscience at King’s College London (www.kcl.ac.uk/ioppn/depts/bcn/dri/lab-groups).

The DRI is a national consortium focused on cutting-edge dementia research funded by the Medical Research Council.

About the role

A new position is available for a post-doctoral Research Associate in synaptic biology in the Basic and Clinical Neuroscience research group led by Dr Emma Clayton.

You will lead a project characterising the proteome and transcriptome of iPSC-derived dopaminergic neurons in the context of Parkinson’s disease. You will be based at King’s College London under the supervision of Dr Emma Clayton (Emma Clayton - BCN). You will contribute to the production and analysis of large-scale ‘omics datasets with a primary focus on analysis of synaptosomal proteomics and transcriptomics, to address major research questions relevant to PD.

This opportunity would suit a bright, talented, highly motivated, and ambitious individual motivated to explore the transcriptome and proteome of iPSC-derived dopaminergic synapses. The post holder will use derive dopaminergic neurons from PD disease-relevant human iPSCs, isolate synaptosomes and conduct quantitative proteomics and transcriptomics to identify disease relevant alterations to synaptic signalling pathways. You will generate and use dataset that will include long read RNA-seq and protein mass-spec. These studies will help to guide the functional interpretation of alterations to the micro-environment of the synapse in Parkinson’s disease.

You will be highly motivated with demonstrable experience in synaptic biology and iPSC culture, as well as an interest in computational analyses. The Clayton group is multidisciplinary and you will work closely with a team interrogating the presynaptic terminal in neurodegenerative diseases such as frontotemporal dementia and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, using lab and computational based approaches.

This is a full-time post (35 hours per week) you will be offered a fixed term contract for 18 months.

About you

Essential criteria

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:


	PhD awarded in Neuroscience, Biochemistry, Genetics or a related discipline.
	Practical experience within a research environment and publication in relevant and referred journals and ability to conduct a detailed review of recent literature.
	Knowledge of next-generation genomic approaches.
	Ability to work with iPSC-derived neurons.
	Experience of super-resolution microscopy of synapses.
	Strong knowledge of synaptic biology .
	Practical experience of a broad number of biochemistry skills:western blotting, RT-PCR, tissue culture, some programming skills in-R, Python or other coding languages.
	Willingness to work as part of a team and to be open-minded and cooperative.


Desirable criteria


	Background knowledge of neuroscience, biological sciences, or a closely related discipline.
	Experience with development of workflows, using languages such as NextFlow.
	An interest in the mission and research of Parkinson’s UK.
	Experience with and knowledge of neurodegenerative disease.
	Experience with attaining funding.


Please note that this is a PhD level role but candidates who have submitted their thesis and are awaiting award of their PhDs will be considered. In these circumstances the appointment will be made at Grade 5, spine point 30 with the title of Research Assistant. Upon confirmation of the award of the PhD, the job title will become Research Associate and the salary will increase to Grade 6.
