Schemes of Service: Research Division: Food, Chemical and Biotechnology Employment Type: Fixed Term About the Project The opening is for a project funded by the National Research Foundation (NRF). The project supports Singapore’s commitment to sustainability and carbon reduction. As a country with limited natural resources, Singapore is investing in innovative carbon dioxide (CO2) utilization technologies to reduce emissions and enhance energy security. This research aims to develop an integrated process for converting CO2 into valuable chemicals using renewable energy. The approach combines biotechnological and electrocatalytic processes to efficiently transform CO2 into useful chemicals, providing a novel and sustainable pathway for chemical manufacturing. The project is led by Dr. Zhou Kang at the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), with research strengths in metabolic engineering, microbial biomanufacturing, and sustainable process development. One Research Fellow will be hired to support the microbial engineering and bioprocess development aspects of the project: The Research Fellow will work under Dr. Zhou Kang at the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT). This role focuses on producing platform aromatics from C2 building blocks using engineered microbial strains, pathway engineering, and fermentation strategies. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in advancing the project towards a lab-scale demonstration of an integrated CO2-to-chemicals process. Key Responsibilities Conduct independent laboratory research related to microbial fermentation, strain engineering, and biotransformation. Develop and optimize microbial strains, biosynthetic pathways, and cultivation strategies to improve efficiency and product yield. Design and support the integration of biotechnological processes into a continuous lab-scale system. Characterize and analyze chemical and biological products using advanced analytical techniques. Collaborate closely with project team members and external collaborators across metabolic engineering, biocatalysis, and related disciplines. Document research findings, prepare technical reports, contribute to scientific publications, and help supervise junior researchers or students when needed. Qualifications & Experience PhD degree in Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Synthetic Biology, or a related field. Demonstrated research experience in one or more of the following areas: microbial fermentation, metabolic engineering, biotransformations, or bioprocess development. Hands-on experience with genetic engineering, molecular biology techniques, and strain construction is highly desirable. Strong problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and the ability to work independently while contributing effectively to collaborative projects. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary research environment. A strong publication record or clear evidence of research productivity will be an advantage. Our lab uses Python, MATLAB and C++ to automate both data analysis and process control. Knowledge in these tools as well as emerging agentic AI will also be an advantage.  Professional Development The initial contract will be for one year, with the possibility of renewal for up to three years based on performance and project needs. The Research Fellow will have opportunities to lead publications, present at conferences, and build an independent research profile within the project. Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree in marine ecology, marine biology, biogeochemistry, geochemistry, environmental science, or a related discipline. They should have strong research experience in field-based marine ecology, including leading or coordinating marine or coastal fieldwork, and demonstrated experience with stable isotope analyses and related data analyses in ecological or biogeochemical contexts. A track record of question-driven research, as evidenced by publications or other research outputs commensurate with career stage, is expected. The successful candidate should have excellent communication, organizational and collaborative skills, and be able to work both independently and within an interdisciplinary team. The appointee will join an active research group at SWIMS and SBS working at the interface of marine ecology and conservation, with a particular focus on stable isotope approaches. They will contribute to the design, implementation and analysis of research projects on marine ecology and biogeochemistry using stable isotope tools, conduct and coordinate fieldwork in marine and coastal ecosystems, and carry out sample collection, processing and laboratory analyses. They will lead data analysis and contribute to the preparation of manuscripts, reports and grant proposals. The appointee will oversee junior research staff and research assistants, and will contribute to the supervision and mentoring of students involved in related projects. Example research focal areas such as trophic ecology, blue carbon ecosystems, and human impacts on coastal ecosystems are welcome, as are other innovative ideas that complement and extend existing work within SWIMS and SBS. The appointee will have opportunities to develop their own research agenda and to pursue new methods or interdisciplinary collaborations within the broader SWIMS and MSc environment. The appointee will be expected to contribute to research-led teaching and training associated with an MSc programme in marine ecology and conservation, through involvement in appropriate teaching activities, mentoring of MSc students and support for field- and project-based learning, as agreed with the programme leadership. They will be required to work at both the SWIMS facilities and on the main HKU campus and at field sites in Hong Kong and surrounding waters. The Faculty of Social Sciences invites applications for the position of UNIVERSITY LECTURER IN EUROPEAN STUDIES for a fixed-term position from 1 August 2026 to 31 July 2030, or as agreed The duties of a University Lecturer include providing teaching in accordance with degree requirements of the degree programmes within the Centre of European Studies (CES), supervising and examining theses, conducting research in their academic field, and contributing to the development of the Centre and to its shared responsibilities. Centre for European Studies (CES) is a multidisciplinary research unit within the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Helsinki, collaborating with other faculties. The Centre advances research and teaching in European Studies, understood broadly as an interdisciplinary field that examines European societies, their interconnections, and the institutions governing cooperation among them through contemporary and historical perspectives. The Centre serves as a host unit for researchers and projects, organises seminars and conferences, and coordinates the international, interdisciplinary Master’s Programme in European and Nordic Studies (ENS). The appointee will teach and supervise students in the ENS programme and contribute to the Centre’s research-led activities. The successful candidate will demonstrate wide-ranging familiarity with and understanding of the multiple subfields of European and EU studies.
