It was established as Obafemi Awolowo University, Ado-Ekiti in 1982.
The university offers graduate, undergraduate and research programmes in different disciplines such as agricultural sciences, arts, basic medical sciences, clinical sciences, education, petroleum, engineering, law, management, and many others.
The university also has different types of residential halls.
It is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities.
