Would you like to develop your own research project in the field of nuclear history, with a special emphasis on global governance and multilateralism? We are looking for a predoctoral university assistant / PhD candidate interested in the history of global nuclear governance. The University of Vienna's Department of History and the newly founded research platform "Multilateralism Revisited" are part of extensive international research networks. Your work setting: You will be affiliated with and based at the University of Vienna's Department of History; become an affiliated member of the interdisciplinary research platform “Multilateralism Revisited,” and join the Doctoral School of Historical and Cultural Studies. Your future tasks: You actively participate in research, teaching & administration, which means: You work on your dissertation and its completion within four years You work on the dissemination of your research (e.g. through conference participation and publications) You become a member of the Doctoral School of Historical and Cultural Studies You assist in conference organization, grant proposal writing, and public outreach activities You teach courses within the scope of the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement for Austrian universities (up to two teaching hours per week) You participate in events and activities of the interdisciplinary research platform "Multilateralism Revisited: The Past, Present, and Future of International Negotiation and Cooperation" This is part of your academic background and personality: Necessary: Completed above-average master's degree in history or a related discipline (degree must be conferred no later than the starting date of the position) Excellent command of written and spoken English Experience with relevant research methods (especially working with primary sources) and academic writing Strong commitment to finish your PhD project within four years Commitment to teamwork and required social skills Commitment to live in or near Vienna Asset: Experience with academic research projects (e.g. as a research assistant) Interest in science communication beyond academia Previous research or practical experience regarding international organizations and multilateralism Proficiency in German What we offer: Duration of employment: The employment duration is 4 years (30 hours/week). Are you fascinated by lab-scale fundamental studies connecting to urgent environmental problems such as climate change and air pollution? Your personal sphere of influence: As a university assistant (praedoc) in this 4-year position, you will be part of the Nanoparticle Dynamics Team around Professor Paul Winkler, and you will be focusing on research topics in aerosol nanoparticle dynamics. Our research aims at fundamental process understanding in aerosol physics and practical applications in environmental settings. Examples include mass spectrometric applications for particle chemical characterization as well as chamber-based experiments for studies of new particle formation of atmospheric relevance as well as instrumentation development. Our Team is part of the Aerosol Physics and Environmental Physics group of the Faculty of Physics. We are member of the recently founded Environment and Climate Research Hub of the University of Vienna offering ample opportunities for cross-discipline interaction within the University of Vienna. Our participation at the CLOUD experiment at CERN provides a large network of leading international scientists in the field. You will also benefit from being fellow of the Vienna Doctoral School in Physics (VDSP), connecting PhD students at the Faculty of Physics from all disciplines. The research team led by Paul Winkler is an international team of innovative scientists on all levels (Master, PhD and Postdoc). Our expertise lies in experimental aerosol nanoparticle dynamics. Your future tasks: You actively participate in research, teaching & administration, which means: You are involved in a fully funded research project addressing nanoparticle detection, characterization and growth analysis. You will present your research plan to the faculty and complete a dissertation agreement within 12-18 months. This will be reviewed and adapted on an annual basis. You will work on your dissertation and towards its completion in time. We expect a large degree of independence paired with a high level of social awareness as the goal will only be achieved in a team. You will contribute to teaching (lab courses, exercise classes) within the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement. You will fill some administrative tasks, contributing to the success and self-organization of the group for research, teaching and administration. You will participate in international measurement campaigns which may include substantial travel. You will continuously stay informed about the state of the art in your field. You contribute to outreach by publications, conference presentations and public activities. This is part of your personality: You have completed your Master's degree or Diploma in physics and/or aerosol related topics such as atmospheric sciences or aerosol chemistry. You have experience in academic writing. You come with a background in general aerosol physics and chemistry. The Role Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in the Department of Engineering, with a focus on advanced solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) modelling, three-dimensional combustion and engine simulation, and AI-assisted modelling approaches for hybrid marine propulsion system development incorporating a range of decarbonisation technologies. This position is part of the EPSRC MaRes Hub and the Horizon Europe project SEASTARS, both of which aim to advance maritime sustainability through the integration of innovative emission-reduction and energy-efficiency technologies across multiple ship classes and shore power applications. The project seeks to deliver industry-relevant modelling toolkits that enable optimal design and operation of greener vessels, backed by real-world demonstrations. The successful candidate will work at the intersection of multi-disciplinary modelling, advanced AI algorithms, and decision-support tool development. Responsibilities will include programming, analysing and interpreting data, and contributing to innovative solutions that support maritime decarbonisation. Additional duties involve supporting research funding proposals, engaging in licensing or spin-out activities, and enhancing the public and commercial impact of the research. The post-holder is employed to work on the EPSRC and Horizon projects which will be led by Prof Dawei Wu. Whilst this means that the post-holder will not be carrying out independent research in his/her own right, the expectation is that they will contribute to the advancement of the project, through the development of their own research ideas/adaptation and development of research protocols. This post is fixed term is time limited and will end on 31/12/2027. Successful applicants will, ideally, be in post by 1 July 2026.

As a University of Applied Learning, SIT works closely with industry in our research pursuits. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT. The primary responsibility of this role is to deliver an industry innovation research project as part of a research team developing molecular and sequencing workflows for microbial characterization. The work supports the rapid detection of microbial bioburden in biopharmaceutical cleaning validation using a Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) biosensor platform. Responsibilities include next-generation sequencing (NGS), qPCR-based molecular assays for microbial quantification and aptamer validation, and experimental support for aptamer discovery targeting environmental microorganisms listed in the US Pharmacopeia. Key Responsibilities Technical Responsibilities Perform microbial community characterization using next-generation sequencing (NGS) platforms such as Illumina sequencing or Oxford Nanopore sequencing.  Design and perform qPCR-based molecular assays for microbial quantification and aptamer validation. Prepare DNA sequencing libraries, including nucleic acid extraction, amplification, and library preparation.  Conduct basic bioinformatics processing of sequencing data, including sequence quality control and taxonomic profiling where required. Support aptamer discovery and validation experiments, including nucleic acid preparation, amplification, and molecular characterization. Perform routine molecular biology techniques such as PCR, gel electrophoresis, DNA purification, and nucleic acid quantification. Maintain accurate laboratory records and experimental documentation. Research & Project Responsibilities Plan and execute experimental workflows to support project milestones related to microbial detection and biosensor development. Contribute to sequencing-based microbial profiling of environmental and cleaning validation samples. Work collaboratively with project investigators and interdisciplinary teams to integrate sequencing and molecular biology results with biosensor development. Prepare technical reports and contribute to scientific publications, presentations, and project documentation. Support generation of experimental data required for project validation and milestone reporting. Operational Responsibilities Ensure laboratory compliance with Work Safety and Health (WSH) regulations and institutional safety guidelines. Manage procurement and inventory of molecular biology and sequencing consumables. Maintain laboratory equipment used for molecular biology and sequencing workflows. Mentorship Support training of junior researchers, research assistants, and students where required.  Contribute to knowledge sharing within the research group. To communicate in any relevant internal or external stakeholders to ensure project deliverables are met. Any ad-hoc duties assigned by Supervisor. Job Requirements Essential Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Bioengineering, or a related field. Possessing a Master’s or PhD degree will be advantageous Hands-on experience with next-generation sequencing technologies, such as Illumina or Oxford Nanopore sequencing platforms including sequencing library preparation Demonstrated experience working with environmental or low-biomass microbial samples. Demonstrated experience with DNA extraction and PCR amplification Demonstrated experience performing qPCR assays for nucleic acid quantification and molecular analysis, including troubleshooting Demonstrated experience with aptamer technologies or nucleic acid-based molecular recognition systems. Strong laboratory skills in molecular biology techniques. Preferred  Familiarity with microbial community sequencing workflows such as 16S rRNA sequencing or metagenomic analysis. Demonstrated experience with bioinformatics tools for sequencing data processing (e.g., quality control, taxonomic classification, microbial community analysis).  Demonstrated experience working in interdisciplinary or industry-linked research projects. Key Competencies Strong experimental design and troubleshooting skills in molecular biology.  Ability to independently conduct laboratory experiments and manage datasets.
