The Centre for Vision, Speech, and Signal Processing is seeking to recruit a Project Manager to support major research projects in generative AI, computer vision and LLM development. You will join an established research group within a highly rated research department, with an excellent computing and software infrastructure for first class research, modern facilities and close links with industry. Surrey’s Institute for People-Centred AI builds on 40 years of work into foundational AI at the Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP) which is ranked 1st in the UK for Computer Vision and in the top-5 for both Audio-Visual AI and Robotics (CS Rankings, Sept 2024). The post sits within Professor Bowden’s sign language research group at CVSSP, which leads a portfolio of major collaborative projects developing AI for sign languages. These include SignGPT, a five-year EPSRC Programme Grant with the University of Oxford (Prof Zisserman) and UCL (Profs Cormier and Woll) building tools to translate automatically between spoken language and photo-realistic sign language video in both directions; UMCS, a UK and Japan collaboration developing real-time sign language translation in everyday conversation; and a Google.org-funded project reducing the cost of sign language translation through AI. We are seeking an experienced project manager to act as a single point of contact across this portfolio, ensuring that the operational aspects of these multi-partner, multi-million-pound projects run smoothly.  The applicant should have project management experience, and ideally a professional project management qualification. The post is funded through SignGPT and is offered for 2 years (in the first instance) at 0.5 FTE. However, there is scope for a larger FTE and/or a longer-term contract where appropriate, given the breadth of the group’s activities. The work will involve Deaf people and users of British Sign Language (BSL), and through wider collaborative links, users of other international sign languages. Knowledge of sign language and awareness of Deaf culture would be advantageous, as would a working knowledge of BSL. Your personal sphere of play: The Institute of Biological Chemistry at the Faculty of Chemistry is seeking a Senior Scientist to work on the synthesis of microbial natural products in the Microbial Biochemistry research group, Böttcher laboratory. The position is initially limited to 4 years, with the possibility of conversion to a permanent position. In our research group, we develop chemical strategies for the tailored control of bacterial behavior with the goal of controlling the growth and pathogenic properties of certain microorganisms as well as their interactions within the human microbiome. We also investigate the chemical interactions between commensal and pathogenic bacteria as well as the chemistry of microbe-human interactions, and strive to exploit the potential of the natural products arising from these interactions through synthetic chemistry. We focus primarily on new anti-infective compounds that, for example, inhibit the production of toxins by pathogenic bacteria or, as highly selective antibiotics, inhibit the growth of only specific bacterial species. Our vision is to develop tailored chemical tools for precision interventions in the human microbiome, thereby laying the groundwork for chemical microbiome engineering in the future. As a University of Applied Learning, SIT works closely with industry in our research pursuits. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT. The primary purpose of this role is to deliver on a collaborative research project, Proteins for Singapore (P4SG), where you will be part of the research team to establish and understand the structuration of algae/soybean/mung bean proteins for high quality alternative protein foods including through high moisture extrusion. Key responsibilities will include: Explore innovative methods for food process optimization including the use of AI and machine-learning Develop and execute methods for characterizing and linking the texture and structure of alternative protein foods Design, execute, and interpret experiments independently. Participate in and manage the research project with Principal Investigators (PI), and the research team members to ensure all project deliverables including periodic progress reports are met. Author papers in high-quality journals and contribute to grant writing in areas that are related to the research. Carry out Risk Assessment, and ensure compliance with Work, Safety and Health Regulations. Coordinate procurement and liaison with vendors/suppliers. Work independently, as well as manage a team of junior researchers and students to ensure proper operation and maintenance of equipment. To communicate and liaise with any internal and external stakeholders to ensure project deliverables are met. Any other ad-hoc duties assigned by supervisor.
