The Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Vienna is the largest Austrian institution of mathematical research and tertiary education in the mathematical sciences. Your professional field of activity:

The Kurt Gödel Research Center for Mathematical Logic (KGRC), led by Univ.-Prof. Matthias Aschenbrenner, PhD, is part of the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Vienna. We are looking for a Senior Scientist to conduct research in model theory; to initiate an effort in computer-based formalization of foundational concepts and results in model theory, in particular, the theory of o-minimal structures and tame geometry.

To bolster your own agenda, you will be committed to acquiring third party funding for postdoctoral and doctoral positions. You will actively participate in the quality assurance of teaching materials created by the group. Moreover, you share the team’s view on the importance of a positive, inclusive, and respectful working environment, and will regularly exchange ideas about current topics and projects in group meetings and seminars. The start of the contract is August 15th, 2026 or later. The exact starting date is negotiable. The position is initially limited to one year. It may be converted into unlimited employment upon mutual agreement.

Your future tasks:

Active participation in research, teaching & administration, which means:


	You have an excellent research profile in mathematical logic (model theory).
	You publish in peer-reviewed journals and give presentations at international meetings.
	You take the lead in the computer-based formalization of foundational results of model theory, in particular, the theory of o-minimal structures and tame geometry.
	You are in charge of the scientific coordination of third-party funded projects at the KGRC.
	You (co-)supervise Bachelor, Master, and Doctoral students in mathematics, and you independently propose bachelor, master, and PhD projects to this end.
	You hold courses independently, both in German and English, within the scope of the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement.
	You participate in evaluation measures and in quality assurance.
	You actively contribute to adminstrative tasks.


Required Qualifications/Position Requirement:


	A completed doctorate in mathematics, with a certificate of completion provided in due time before the start of the contract.
	A research profile in model theory, especially o-minimal structures.
	Outstanding expertise, proven through international publications in leading journals in the field and presentation experience in an international setting.
	Excellent abilities to work in a team.
	Excellent command of English, both written and spoken.
	Supervision and experience in teaching of lectures in the area of model theory in both German and English.
	Proven ability to acquire competitive third-party funding is a strong additional asset.

The Astrophotonics Program brings together researchers from astronomy, physics and engineering to design, build and test advanced photonic technologies with applications in radio astronomy, optical astronomy, space science, quantum technologies and national security. 	A PhD in physics, astronomy, engineering or another relevant discipline, with an internationally recognised research profile and an outstanding publication record in leading peer-reviewed journals.
	Proven success in attracting competitive research funding and developing sustainable research collaborations across academia, government and industry.
	Significant experience leading research teams and supervising higher degree research (HDR) students and early-career researchers to successful outcomes.
	Expertise in several of the following areas: radio astronomy instrumentation, free-space optical laser communications (terrestrial and/or space applications), and quantum technologies.
	Outstanding leadership, communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with a demonstrated commitment to inclusion, diversity, collaboration and research excellence.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) is one of the five academic departments in the Faculty of Engineering, and it offers a full spectrum of BME programmes, from BSc, MSc to PhD. The team is the first group to offer Biomedical Engineering related undergraduate programme in Hong Kong, and has made great achievements in BME education, innovative research, and technology transfer. Duties

	A strategic thinker with an ability to analyse complex issues, assess impacts, and develop feasible solution.
	Demonstrated ability to work effectively with multiple stakeholders including excellent negotiation, conflict resolution, relationship building and influencing skills together with high level of diplomacy and discretion.
	Highly developed organisational and time management skills, attention to detail, flexibility, and the ability to prioritise own workload, to work consistently within busy schedules and to meet deadlines.
	Significant and broad knowledge of the University’s policies and procedures, particularly in relation to interpreting policy, or an ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge.
	Previous successful experience in senior management role relevant to the Faculty/Division context, particularly demonstrating effective planning and resource management skills including demonstrated ability to manage workflows, multiple complex projects and meeting deadlines.

Remuneration/Salary

Base Salary Range: $143,080 to $149,894 per annum (HEW 9)

This role attracts 17% superannuation (pension) in addition to the base salary.
