The UM6P Institute of Applied Physics constitutes a dynamic community comprising faculty members, students, postdocs, and administrative and technical staff, all dedicated to UM6P’s mission as a student-centered research university. The UM6P Engineering Physics School (EPS), established by UM6P, stands as a premier engineering physics school in Morocco. The program awards an EPS engineering degree, and its education and research are developed at the UM6P Institute of Applied Physics.

Teaching: The ideal candidate should demonstrate proficiency in teaching at all Engineering Physics School (EPS) levels. He/she is expected to deliver physics courses or applied physics and related disciplines. Specific courses may include Quantum Physics, Statistical Physics, Solid-State Physics, Applied Physics, and advanced topics. Previous teaching experience is highly desirable.

Research: The selected candidate will conduct research within the UM6P Institute of Applied Physics, which is recognized for cutting-edge research and technology development. Collaborating with students, postdoctoral fellows, and visiting scholars worldwide, the institute is committed to training a new generation of African physicists and faculty members. Research endeavors primarily focus on experimental and theoretical aspects of 2D Materials Physics. A notable characteristic of institute research is the strong collaboration among members, fortified by shared simulation tools and top-quality experimental efforts. Research efforts span diverse domains of modern science, including 2D Materials Physics, phonon-magneto transport, low-temperature Quantum Transport, Photon Scattering, Ab Initio Calculations, Molecular Dynamics, Monte Carlo Simulations, and more.

Candidate Profile: The ideal candidate should possess excellent training in fundamental condensed matter physics, demonstrating an interest in applying physics to industrial challenges and societal problems. They should have internationally recognized research expertise in one or more physics disciplines, preferably holding a Ph.D. in Computational Condensed Matter Physics. Nationality is not a limiting factor. The candidate's higher education and professional experience outside Morocco should be substantial to ensure the international character of the institution. Strong collaboration skills with teachers from diverse disciplines and a keen interest and proven experience in student support, mentoring, and interactive pedagogies are essential. An openness and interest in incorporating new technologies into education (e-learning, platforms, MOOCs, etc.) and pedagogical innovations are also desired. Strong conceptualization and modeling skills and a results-oriented approach complete the candidate profile.

Job description

The university seeks to appoint an exceptionally motivated and energetic leader of high professional and academic standing as Executive Director: Research Development and Support. Reporting to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research and Innovation, the Executive Director is a member of the University's Executive Leadership Group and has strategic, operational, and administrative oversight of the Research Development and Support Division. The Executive Director must effectively and collegially steward the Division to achieve in all aspects related to research and innovation while overseeing the following sub-divisions: Strategic Research Support, Research Administration, Research Intelligence and the Technology Transfer Office.

The Executive Director will be expected to:


	Develop and implement a comprehensive strategic plan for research and innovation in alignment with the university's mission and goals.
	Provide visionary leadership to advance the university's research and innovation initiatives.
	Promote a culture of research excellence and innovation among faculties, researchers and students.
	Manage the administrative aspects of research, including budgets, grants management, and research compliance.
	Strategically manage Research Development and Support as well as prioritise the Commercialization aspect of the Research and Innovation initiatives, and grow this area and opportunity for funding, grants, intellectual property and patents.
	 In partnership with the faculties, institutes and research centres, drive or support initiatives to realise the University's Strategic Plans.
	Develop, update, articulate and implement institutional research and innovation strategies.
	Promote and advance excellence in research and innovation.
	Foster a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship within the university.
	Facilitate technology transfer and commercialisation of research.
	Identify and pursue external research funding opportunities from national and international funding sources, collaborators, partners, government funders and philanthropic support.
	Promote responsible conduct of research and adherence to ethical principles.
	Enhance the visibility and reputation of the university's research programmes.
	Sustain and strengthen national and international research and innovation partnerships and collaborations.

Minimum requirements


	A PhD / Doctoral Degree (NQF 10) or equivalent.
	Substantive and acknowledged academic/research stature.
	Senior executive management experience (at least 10 years) at a research or academic institution within the higher education sector.
	Proven excellent strategic leadership skills and knowledge, insights and vision to support the academic community and leadership in the University's drive to deliver cutting-edge research and innovation.
	Sound knowledge of, insight into, and vision of the Higher Education sector-Research and Innovation landscape, nationally, regionally and internationally.
	Ability to maintain and strengthen relationships with stakeholders and partners, nationally and internationally.
	Ability to manage the portfolio's finances and resources effectively and efficiently.
	Demonstrated leadership at all academic levels and in staff recruitment mentorship and development.
	The capacity for strategic leadership and operational excellence within the portfolio.
	Proven resource, strategic and people management skills, with exceptional ability and resillience to function under pressure.

Terms of appointment: 

The position of Executive Director is a 5-year contract appointment, with an Executive- level remuneration and benefits package commensurate with experience and qualifications. The appointment may be renewed twice for further terms of office, subject to performance.

Retirement Age:

The normal retirement age for members of the Executive Leadership Group is 65. Consideration will be given to candidates who would be able to serve for a 5-year term.

About the role:

The purpose of the Open Research Manager (RDM & Metrics) is to provide operational management of research data management (RDM) services, developing and delivering researcher-focused services to support the effective management of research data and increase its impact across the university and externally. The role will also explore the responsible use of metrics and open research indicators to inform the work of the team.

This is an exciting opportunity for candidates looking to deliver an RDM service appropriate to the needs of researchers at King’s, and who wish to utilise their skills and expertise in research support and team management. The focus of the role is to provide advice and operational leadership on RDM, acting as an advocate and key contact on research data management across the University and within Libraries & Collections, embedding the university’s RDM Policy. You will be helping researchers, faculties, and the University in achieving compliance with the requirements of research funders’ RDM policies and making research data FAIR.
