About De Montfort University

Basic information and contact details for De Montfort University

institution
Originating in 1870 from the Leicester School of Art, De Montfort University (DMU) was granted university status in 1992 and took its name from Simon de Montfort, Earl of Leicester, who established the first parliament in 1265.  The modern-day DMU has around 20,000 students, drawn from around the world and divided across its four faculties of Art, Design and Humanities, Business and Law, Health and life Sciences, and Technology. DMU is one of the few universities in the country to offer the block teaching method and students who have studied with us using it say that they enjoy focusing on one module at a time and having regular assessments and feedback rather than lots of exams at the end of the year. Block teaching also means you can work closely with your tutors and really get to know others on your course so that you feel part of the learning community. Our students benefit from guaranteed work experience opportunities and take advantage of our strong relationships with big employers such as ASOS, Disney, HSBC, KPMG, L’Oreal, Rolls-Royce and Pfizer. And the support doesn’t stop when you leave – you’ll have lifelong careers support with networking events, recruitment fairs and expert one-to-one advice. In 2023, DMU was recognised as a top UK institution for work-based learning and the leader of our career mentoring programme won a national award for his work supporting students. DMU Global is our award-winning international experience programme. You’ll get the opportunity to travel abroad through academic trips, summer schools, internships, work placements, year-long study exchanges and volunteering. Through the programme you can enhance your studies, experience new cultures and develop skills valued by employers. For current students, there are opportunities to travel to locations including the USA, Dubai, Fiji, China, Amsterdam, South Korea, Spain, Berlin and Bali, to name a few. As we are a campus-based university in the city centre, everything Leicester has to offer is right on your doorstep. We’re one of the few universities in the UK where you’ll get the best of both worlds - A friendly and safe campus that’s just a short walk to a lively city centre. We have a great blend of historical buildings, innovative architecture and modern accommodation that will make you feel at home, and you’ll be spoilt for choice with so many spaces to study, relax, socialise and eat. For extra-curricular activities, students have over 140 clubs and societies to choose, and the university also hosts guest lectures on campus with those who are leaders in their field: shoe designer Jimmy Choo and the novelist (and alumnus) Adele Parks among them. De Montfort University continues to invest in spaces like the Vijay Patel building like our digital design hub or improving teaching rooms, eating areas and the Students’ Union, we also pride ourselves on our focus to enhance the green space that surrounds campus.
