Job Description SCHOOL OF CHINESE MEDICINE TEACHING AND RESEARCH DIVISION Research Assistant Professor (25260519) Applications are invited for a Research Assistant Professor position in the School of Chinese Medicine (SCM), Hong Kong Baptist University. The SCM is committed to advancing research that integrates Chinese Medicine, aging research, immunity, and tissue degeneration, promoting innovative translational discoveries that address major chronic diseases. HKBU provides a vibrant research environment that bridges traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) with state-of-the-art biomedical sciences, fostering unique opportunities for interdisciplinary innovation in aging research, immune regulation, and regenerative medicine. The ideal candidate is expected to advance the SCM’s strategic priorities by investigating mechanisms of aging; elucidating pathways underlying immune dysregulation and inflammatory diseases; defining the biological basis of tissue degeneration across musculoskeletal, metabolic, and inflammatory systems; applying cutting-edge multi-omics technologies such as single-cell sequencing and spatial transcriptomics to translational research; and developing novel therapeutic strategies and biomarkers that integrate Chinese medicine concepts with modern biomedical science. Responsibilities: Conduct research on aging biology, immune dysregulation, inflammation, and tissue degeneration; Lead translational projects employing single-cell sequencing, immune profiling, transgenic models, and molecular biology to uncover pathomechanisms and therapeutic targets in arthritis, osteoporosis, intervertebral disc degeneration, and autoimmune diseases; Develop innovative research directions in immune aging and degenerative disorders, including novel diagnostic or therapeutic strategies inspired by herbal medicine, natural products, or TCM syndrome biology; Collaborate with clinical and industry partners to translate research findings into practical applications; Supervise postgraduate students and research staff, and contribute to the academic activities of the SCM; and Prepare competitive research grant proposals and publish high-quality scientific papers. Requirements: A PhD in Biology, Immunology, Biomedical Sciences, Chinese Medicine, or related disciplines; A strong publication record in top-tier journals, with demonstrated leadership in aging, immune dysregulation, and tissue degeneration research; Proven experience in single-cell multi-omics, transgenic mouse models, molecular and cellular biology, and the mechanistic study of inflammatory and degenerative diseases; Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research and secure competitive funding; and Excellent written and oral communication skills; strong enthusiasm for interdisciplinary collaboration. The initial appointment will be made on a fixed-term contract of up to three years. Re-appointment thereafter is subject to mutual agreement. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT. Key Responsibilities Participate in and manage the research project with the Principal Investigator (PI), co-PIs, research team and industry partners to ensure all project deliverables are met. Conduct insights-driven evaluations of existing QA/QC testing practices and identify opportunities to enhance efficiency and reduce redundant testing while maintaining compliance. Curate, standardize and integrate historical and statistical data to form the foundation of a structured database for construction QA/QC and traceability. Design and implement a digital chain-of-custody framework that captures assurance records including mill certificates, fabrication data, inspection results and carbon footprint information. Develop, train and validate AI models to automate QA/QC processes, enabling real-time verification, anomaly detection and consistency checks across records. Develop a cloud-based verification platform for digital data collection and real-time analytics. Develop and apply non-destructive testing (NDT) methods and data-driven approaches to determine material properties of reclaimed steel. Investigate geometric imperfections, accumulated deformations, and their impact on structural performance, particularly for compression members. Develop data-driven reusability assessment platforms integrating NDT data, machine learning models, and RFID-enabled traceability systems. Prepare and draft technical reports, conference/journal papers, and presentation materials; present research findings to internal reviews, industry partners and stakeholders. Engage with industry stakeholders throughout development, testing and refinement to ensure alignment with real-world requirements. To communicate in any relevant internal or external stakeholders to ensure project deliverables are met. Any ad-hoc duties assigned by Supervisor.  Job Requirements Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Civil/Construction Engineering, Engineering Systems or equivalent. Strong foundation in data engineering, AI/ML development, and software systems (e.g., data pipelines, cloud services, dashboards, web-based application development). Experience in handling real-world datasets and model development/deployment workflows. Domain expertise in building construction/civil/structural engineering, including familiarity with building management systems, software integration, data collection and analysis. Knowledge of construction QA/QC and quality control workflows (e.g., inspection processes, test documentation, traceability and compliance records) is an advantage. Strong background in structural engineering, structural mechanics, or steel structures. Familiarity with non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques for structural materials is desirable. Experience with structural modelling and analysis tools (e.g., finite element modelling, structural simulation) is desirable. Good interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams. Strong analytical and conceptual abilities; able to work both in a team and independently. Able to work under pressure and meet deadlines. Key Competencies Proficient in Python or other equivalent programming languages. Strong foundation in data analytics and data-driven modelling. Able to build and maintain strong working relationships with people within and external to the university. Job Description SCHOOL OF CHINESE MEDICINE Multiple Senior Research Assistant positions are available in the Centre for Chinese Herbal Medicine Drug Development, which is located in the Hong Kong Science Park. CENTRE FOR CHINESE HERBAL MEDICINE DRUG DEVELOPMENT Funded by the Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC) of the Hong Kong Government, the Centre for Chinese Herbal Medicine Drug Development Limited (the Centre) was established in September 2020 to accelerate the development of Chinese Herbal Medicine (CHM)-based drugs and serve as a strategic platform to promote collaborations among local and international researchers, institutions and industry. The Centre aims to achieve the goal by enhancing the quality of pre-clinical and clinical CHM research and transforming the results into pharmaceutical products for international markets. In particular, the Centre develops treatments and cures for diseases such as ulcerative colitis and chronic constipation. It also supports the incubation of new CHM-based pharmaceutical start-ups that will target the global market, and nurtures talent for CHM research in Hong Kong. Senior Research Assistants in Chinese medicine research (24250237) The appointees will participate in preclinical research projects relating to cutting-edge new drug development based on Chinese herbal medicine. Responsibilities: Research and compilation of literature on classic traditional Chinese medicine prescriptions; Research on modern preparation processes and quality control criteria for classic chinese herbal formulas; Contribute to general laboratory operations, including the maintenance of cell culture and animals; Preparation and publication of research articles; and Undertake any other duties as assigned. Requirements: Hold a master's degree in chinese pharmacy, pharmacy, pharmaceutical analysis, pharmaceutical preparation, or other related disciplines; Proficient in extraction, purification, and qualitative/quantitative analysis techniques of active ingredients in traditional Chinese medicine; Familiar with cellular/molecular biology techniques; An excellent command of written and spoken English and Chinese; and Passionate about scientific research, self-motivated, with independent research capabilities and strong teamwork spirit. Applicants with a higher level of qualification and/or experience may be considered for the positions of Research Associate or Senior Research Associate.
