As a member of the School Executive, the Head will work closely with the Dean and senior leaders to deliver the School's strategic plans at Department level, strengthen the staff experience, and build a high-performing academic community. With greater autonomy and local decision-making moving to Departments, this role will play a key part in identifying investment priorities, driving innovation in teaching and research, managing risk, and delivering against agreed KPIs. Established in April 2024, the Biomedical Engineering Department is a growing and strategically important area for RMIT. The School is seeking a leader who can develop and deliver a bold vision for the discipline, deepen collaboration with the School of Health and Biosciences, and expand partnerships in advanced manufacturing and materials science. To be successful in this position, you'll have: Strong academic leadership and management skills with demonstrated ability to lead teams and deliver on strategic objectives. Established research record in biomedical engineering at the national level and an internationally recognised research track record through the attraction of external funding with demonstrated capacity to lead and promote excellence in research. Description The Future-Generation of Resilient and Infrastructure Design Technology Hub (Future-GRID TecH) in the Division of Engineering at New York University Abu Dhabi, seeks to recruit one motivated post-doctoral associate (or research scientist for experienced candidates with 5 years of post-PhD experience). The candidate will work under the supervision of Future-GRID TecH director Dr. Mohamed Moustafa to carry out cutting-edge research in the broad area of future structures and resilient infrastructure systems with interest in applications of new and emerging technologies. Particular areas of interest include: structural 3D printing (metals, concrete, and composites) computational mechanics and structural topology optimization vision-based structural health monitoring autonomous and drone-based infrastructure inspection and vibration monitoring Successful candidates must hold a PhD degree in Civil, Structural, Mechanical, or Material Engineering. Other related field such as Computer Science, Nuclear Engineering, and Material Science are also welcomed. Required qualifications include: strong communication and presentation skills; a track record in writing and publishing peer-reviewed journal publications; and previous or relevant experience in mentoring or supervising undergraduate student research or junior graduate students. A formal training, education, or certification in a secondary area (beyond the main PhD focus) such as additive manufacturing, advanced/hybrid manufacturing, machine learning, artificial intelligence, computer vision, robotics, UAVs, etc. is a plus. Other preferred qualifications include: expertise in programming and coding (preferably using Python and C++) and GUI development; expertise in computational mechanics and finite element simulation and modeling; expertise in laboratory and multi-scale experimental testing at the material, component, and structural levels. The candidates will work in a multidisciplinary environment consisting of PhD-level scientists and undergraduate students, conduct high-quality “innovative and independent” experimental, analytical, and/or computational research, publish research work and results in scientific peer-reviewed journals and conferences, mentor undergraduate students, and participate in writing research grant proposals.
