About Chattogram Veterinary and Animal Sciences University

Basic information and contact details for Chattogram Veterinary and Animal Sciences University

Chattogram Veterinary and Animal Sciences University is a public specialist university located in Chattogram, Bangladesh. Its origins date back to 1995, when Chittagong Government Veterinary College was established to address national demand for professionals in veterinary medicine and animal sciences. The university admitted its first 50 students in 1996 as a constituent of the University of Chittagong, before becoming an independent university in 2006 under the CVASU Act.

Chattogram, on Bangladesh’s south-eastern coast, is the country’s main port city. Whilst the university’s main campus is located in Khulshi, its facilities extend across several locations. CVASU operates several unique facilities, including a research and farm-based campus in Hathazari, a Teaching and Training Pet Hospital and Research Centre in Purbachal, Dhaka, a Coastal Biodiversity, Marine Fisheries and Wildlife Research Centre near Cox’s Bazar, and a research vessel on Kaptai Lake in Rangamati.

CVASU has four faculties and over 20 departments covering veterinary medicine, food science and technology, fisheries, and biotechnology and genetic engineering. Its programmes include the five-year doctor of veterinary medicine (DVM), alongside degrees in food science and technology, fisheries, and biotechnology and genetic engineering, as well as MS, MPH and PhD programmes.

The university currently has over 1,500 students and more than 150 faculty members, with facilities including several laboratories, two animal hospitals and four student halls.

CVASU is home to an Anatomy Museum, which is the only museum of its type in Bangladesh. It houses preserved animal specimens, skeletons and stuffed animals, as well as a Fisheries Museum containing fish, shellfish, algae and coral specimens.
