What we are looking for:

The  Vienna International School of Earth and Space Sciences (VISESS)  is soliciting applications for  VISESS Completion Grants  starting in summer semester 2026.

VISESS addresses societal challenges through inter- and trans-disciplinary academic research connecting the cosmos with planets and atmospheres including its environments and with the anthroposphere. We aim our students to become world-leading experts in either of these three branches while also confidently communicate and contribute across all three branches.

The VISESS Completion Grants aim to support VISESS doctoral students during the final phase of their doctoral studies to focus on the completion and submission of their thesis. VISESS doctoral students employed at the University of Vienna within the last six months before the start of the grant can apply for a three-month completion contract. Your future tasks:

You actively participate in research, teaching & administration in the context of the successful completion of your thesis, which means:


	You finalise your dissertation according to your doctoral thesis agreement. We expect you to complete and submit your thesis at the end of the grant.
	You continue to participate in research, teaching, administration, (co-)supervision of students, examination activities, evaluation activities and in quality assurance as appropriate in the context of the successful completion of your thesis.


Requirements:


	You are enrolled in the doctoral programme of DSPL45 and a doctoral student member of VISESS who agreed to the Code of Good Practice.
	You have successfully passed your public presentation, submitted your dissertation agreement, and since then submitted your annual progress reports.
	You have shown active and regular participation in VISESS activities.
	You can provide a convincing statement that the completion and submission of your thesis can be expected at the end of the grant.
	You can provide a statement from your supervisory team on their commitment to support you in the final phase of your writing process.
	You have ensured that there is no other funding source available.

The position

International migration and mobility are transforming democratic politics across Europe and beyond. These issues lie at the heart of today’s political debates, influencing power dynamics and necessitating new approaches to policymaking at all levels of government.

We are looking to hire a tenure-track professor who is passionate about understanding the political dimensions of migration and citizenship. We welcome applications from excellent candidates researching at least one of the following aspects of migration: ethnic, cultural or religious diversity; migrants’ political participation and representation; or the role of gender and human rights in shaping migration regimes. We expect the candidate to be committed to cutting-edge research and teaching at all levels (BA, MA and PhD).

The successful candidate will have a strong track record in research in the field of migration and citizenship studies which is evidenced by empirical work on the basis of solid methodological skills.

The Department of Political Science is a vibrant and intellectually diverse community of scholars. Our research covers important topics such as comparative politics, politics and gender, international politics, political theory, global health, and sustainability and climate change. By embracing diversity of thought, perspective, and research methodology, we aim to further our understanding of the most pressing political issues and contribute to positive societal change in Europe and beyond. Beyond our department, scholars of migration will find many potential collaborators and peers throughout the Faculty of Social Sciences. This position is a maternity leave replacement, and it is vacant for the period of absence of the member of staff. The Department of Political Science, a subunit of the Faculty of Social Sciences, addresses all major fields of political science. It is dedicated to innovative and problem-oriented research and provides students with a wide range of specialisations. Members of the Department study the transformation of governance, statehood and democracy across different policy areas, geographical regions and political areas.

You will join the Centre for the Study of Contemporary Solidarity (CeSCoS), led by Professor Barbara Prainsack. This research group investigates how solidarity shapes social justice, institutional design, and policy interventions across a range of domains, using rigorous qualitative and theoretically grounded approaches. The Centre brings together pre- and post-doctoral researchers and fellows from diverse disciplinary backgrounds. You would be welcome to bring and pursue your own research interests within the team.

Your future tasks:

Participation in research, teaching and administration in the field of comparative policy analysis and qualitative methods as well as in the research group CeSCoS (Centre for the Study of Contemporary Solidarity, led by Univ.-Prof. Dr. Barbara Prainsack).

This involves, in particular, the participation in the organisation of events, seminars, and other formats of academic collaboration and exchange:

The professorship will focus on language acquisition in the Romance languages (L1, L2, foreign language acquisition, multilingualism) both in research and teaching. We expect a PhD in this field of research covering at least one of the three languages French, Italian and Spanish.
