Central University of Himachal Pradesh

Established under the Central Universities Act 2009, the Central University of Himachal Pradesh is a public university that became operational in 2010. Located in Dharamshala, Kangra district, in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, the university was established as part of the Government of India’s programme to create central universities in states that previously did not have one. It is funded and regulated by India’s University Grants Commission.

It operates temporary teaching facilities across Dharamshala, Shahpur and Dehra, with its headquarters located near the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala. The university is developing permanent campuses at Dharamshala and Dehra, with the proposed Beas Campus in Dehra expected to accommodate the majority of the university’s academic activities. Its location places the university within the Dhauladhar Mountain range.

Academically, it is organised into 12 schools and 23 departments covering commerce and management, physical and material sciences, life sciences, earth and environmental sciences, mathematics and computer science, languages, education, tourism and hospitality, performing and visual arts, and journalism and new media.

It also offers certificate and short-term programmes in non-traditional fields such as yoga.

Sustainability forms a visible part of university life. It has committed to advancing all 17 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, with campus initiatives including solar panels, green audits, waste segregation, recycling and composting, tree planting, biodiversity documentation and sustainable landscaping.
