Basic information and contact details for Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences

institution

Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences is located on Bugando Hill in the centre of Tanzania’s second city of Mwanza. It is a private, Catholic institution also known locally as Bugando University.

It was founded by the Tanzanian Episcopal Conference as the Mwanza branch of Saint Augustine University of Tanzania in 2003. It was recognised by the Tanzanian Commission of Universities two years later and took on its current form in 2009.

Courses are taught across schools of medicine, pharmacy, nursing and public health. There are also schools of allied health sciences and graduate studies.

It shares its hill campus with its teaching partner, the 1,000-bed Buganda Medical Centre. The largest school, based on number of students, is the school of medicine.

It has also been influenced strongly by Mwanza’s relationship with the German city of Wurzburg, dating back to the 1960s. Collaborations with Wurzburg University include the establishment of the Centre for Advanced Humanities and Medical Studies in 2020 and the launch of a joint master's programme in epidemiology and biostatistics in 2023.

Student accommodation is limited, with priority for hostel space given to first-year students.
