Job Purpose:  The Research Engineer will support applied research and innovation in sustainability focusing on, but not limited to, the Built Environment sector, working with internal teams and industry partners to develop practical solutions. The role focuses on translating scientific concepts into scalable solutions that address challenges in mitigating the impact of climate change and meeting environmental sustainability target through resource efficiency, energy management, renewable energy, waste management, and other sustainable solutions for various industries. Research engineers will collaborate closely with faculty, professional officers and industry partners to execute commercially viable solutions that address real-world challenges. In the process, research engineers gain valuable applied research capabilities aligned with evolving industry needs. Key Responsibilities: Applied Research & Development Perform sustainability assessment and analysis for organizational green transition. Develop of sustainability solutions and training roadmap development for organizational green transition, focusing on but not limited to the Built Environment sector. Develop and execute of sustainability projects by conducting experiments, data collection, and analysis for Proof of Concept (POC) and implementation for organisations in, but not limited to, the built environment sector at neighbourhood-scale and building-scale, such as microclimate study, building energy and resource-use efficiency, sustainability strategies and technologies. Industry Collaboration Support collaborations with industry partners to understand problem statements and contribute to solution development Assist in project scoping by gathering technical inputs and identifying relevant capabilities within the ecosystem (IHLs, research centres, industry partners) Participate in industry meetings, discussions, and project engagements Project Execution & Support Assist in planning and executing projects to ensure timely delivery of outcomes Generate technical reports, presentations, and documentation on the development of sustainability solutions and applications Contribute to grant proposals and project submissions where required Track project progress and maintain proper documentation of activities Job Requirements:  Bachelor’s degree with 5+ year experience OR Master’s degree with 2+ year experience in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services. Strong knowledge and experience in building passive strategies, ACMV systems and control. Hands on experience on experimental studies, including urban microclimate and thermal comfort study, is highly advantageous. Possess understanding of sustainability concepts (e.g., LCA, carbon foot printing, resource efficiency). Strong analytical skills and attention to detail. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Key competencies:  Possess understanding of sustainability challenges faced by industries locally and globally. Strong interpersonal and communication skills to communicate effectively with industry partners and stakeholders. Ability to work collaboratively in a cross-functional and multidisciplinary environment. Proactive approach to continuous learning and development in the sustainability field. 1 x full time, fixed term (2 years) position available in the School of Science within STEM College Salary Academic Level A ($80,755 - $109,536) + 17% Superannuation Based at the City, but may be required to work and/or be based at other campuses of the University About the Role We are seeking an engineer to develop next-generation photonic devices using artificial intelligence, inverse design methods, and physics-based modelling. The role is embedded within the ARC E2Crop Hub and the Centre for Atomaterials and Nanomanufacturing (RMIT University), which focus on renewable energy systems, intelligent sensing, advanced materials, and nanoscale device technologies. The successful candidate will develop machine learning approaches (including generative models and physics-informed neural networks) to design and optimise integrated photonic devices and metasurfaces. This includes building automated workflows that link electromagnetic simulation tools with AI models to accelerate device discovery and performance optimisation. The role involves applying computational methods such as topology optimisation, adjoint techniques, and data-driven modelling to identify high-performance, manufacturable photonic structures while accounting for fabrication limits and multi-physics effects. You will also contribute to internal software tools that support rapid prototyping and enable broader research teams to use AI-driven design methods. The position offers access to advanced computational infrastructure and fabrication facilities, supporting research at the intersection of photonics, AI, and nanotechnology. About You Deep understanding of waveguide optics, light-matter interaction, and plasmonics Proficiency with electromagnetic simulation tools (e.g., Lumerical FDTD/MODE, COMSOL Multiphysics, Ansys HFSS, or Meep) Familiarity with Photonic Integrated device design flow and foundry PDKs (Silicon Photonics, SiN, or III-V) Strong proficiency in Python and machine learning frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow, or JAX) Experience with photonic design techniques and global optimisation algorithms (Genetic Algorithms, Particle Swarm, Gradient Descent) Experience implementing deep learning architectures relevant to physics, such as CNNs for image-based field prediction, Graph Neural Networks (GNNs), or Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) Solid grasp of numerical methods, partial differential equations (PDEs), and linear algebra Experience with high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud-based simulation acceleration Experience with integrated photonic device fabrication and light-matter interactions Evidence of research output including high quality publications, conference contributions and/or technical reports in the field. Ability to generate alternative funding projects through effective liaison with industry and government. Ability to work autonomously whilst displaying a strong commitment to work in a team environment, including the demonstrated ability to confidently and effectively work with colleagues, project team leaders, and industry partners. Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and effectively manage varying workloads and respond to changing priorities as required. Demonstrated high level of communication skills. Problem-solving abilities for determining innovative solutions to the complex problems common to photonics design and fabrication. The primary purpose of this role is to deliver on a collaborative research project, Proteins for Singapore (P4SG), where you will be part of the research team to establish and understand the structuration of algae/soybean/mung bean proteins for high quality alternative protein foods including through high moisture extrusion. Key responsibilities will include: Explore innovative methods for food process optimization including the use of AI and machine-learning Develop and execute methods for characterizing and linking the texture and structure of alternative protein foods Design, execute, and interpret experiments independently. Author papers in high-quality journals and contribute to grant writing in areas that are related to the research. Carry out Risk Assessment, and ensure compliance with Work, Safety and Health Regulations. Coordinate procurement and liaison with vendors/suppliers. Work independently, as well as manage a team of junior researchers and students to ensure proper operation and maintenance of equipment. To communicate and liaise with any internal and external stakeholders to ensure project deliverables are met. Any other ad-hoc duties assigned by supervisor. Ideal qualities of the candidate include: Able to build and maintain strong working relationships with people within and external to the university.
