Job Description FACULTY OF SCIENCE DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS The Department has focus research areas in (a) Advanced Materials & Energy and (b) Biophysics & Complex Systems. Interdisciplinary research is actively promoted by the Faculty of Science, fostered under the University-wide six Interdisciplinary Labs (https://interdisciplinary-research.hkbu.edu.hk/), and supported by state-of-the-art infrastructure and facilities, such as the Life Science Imaging Centre (https://research.hkbu.edu.hk/resources/facilities-and-labs/hkbu-life-science-imaging-centre). Being part of a rapidly evolving research and educational landscape in the region, the Department strives to nurture leadership in emerging fields of transdisciplinary science, in particular advanced materials and device physics for biomedical/healthcare and green energy applications, big data and AI in smart sensor technology, and quantitative and systems biology. These efforts are supported by infrastructural and internationalisation initiatives at the University level and grounded on the Department's research achievements (evidenced by extensive international collaborations, external reviews such as Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), start-up companies and prestigious awards). The Department invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank Professor / Associate Professor / Assistant Professor. Professor / Associate Professor / Assistant Professor (25260372) Responsibilities: The appointees will perform high-impact research, teach and supervise students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and contribute to professional and institutional services. Collaboration with other faculty members in research and teaching is also expected. Requirements: The candidates should have a PhD degree in Physics, Microelectronics, Advanced Materials or other relevant disciplines, a proven track record of collaborative research and a strong commitment to teaching. Experimental scientists with strong expertise in soft matters, biomaterials, flexible electronics, and electronics with living systems for applications in health monitoring, biomedical sensor devices, and multi-functional human-machine interaction, such as wearable electronics, microchip implant for machine-brain interface, tissue repair, and disease diagnosis, monitoring and treatment, are especially encouraged to apply. The appointee is expected to conduct world-class research and to teach at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The Role and the Department Research and Innovation Services (RIS) provides guidance, expert advice and hands-on support for all aspects of research and research-related work, including securing funding, working with partners, undertaking knowledge exchange, demonstrating impact, commercialising outputs, ensuring good research practice and supporting professional development. We are seeking a Post Award Finance and Project Officer to join our Post Award Team within Research Operations. This role provides an exciting opportunity to oversee a portfolio of externally funded projects, with a particular emphasis on non-research awards. These include complex, coordinator-led regional initiatives, KTPs, and a variety of Knowledge Exchange awards that are essential to Durham's objectives. You will deliver comprehensive post-award financial and administrative support, ensuring that project leaders and researchers receive timely, expert advice. Your responsibilities will span the full grant lifecycle, from award acceptance and project setup, through financial monitoring and budget management, to final claims, reconciliation, project closure, and preparation for both internal and external audits. Stakeholder engagement is at the core of this role. You will act as the primary point of contact for internal and external partners, facilitating clear communication and effective coordination across departments and funding bodies. You will also regularly review project budgets, income, and expenditure to maintain accuracy and to identify and address any significant variances such as under- or overspending, ineligible costs, or issues with overhead recovery. The postholder has the following key responsibilities: Manage the post-award financial administration of non-research grants, ensuring accurate and timely closure. Prepare and submit financial claims, invoices, and statements in line with funder and institutional deadlines. Monitor budgets, income, and expenditure, identifying and resolving variances, and providing financial forecasts to project leads. Reconcile project accounts, process final expenditure and exchange rate journals, and ensure accurate allocation of income. Ensure compliance with funder terms and conditions, advising stakeholders on eligible expenditure and removing ineligible costs. Coordinate staff approvals with HR, ensuring alignment with project budgets and funder requirements. Calculate and transfer fEC overheads/indirect costs in accordance with approved budgets. Liaise with internal teams (Finance, HR, Departments) and external stakeholders (funders, HEIs, partners) to resolve queries. Maintain accurate, auditable records and ensure financial systems reflect final approved expenditure. Working pattern: Monday - Friday. Hybrid 2 days in the office. You can work additional days in the office if you choose. The SIPROME project investigates how professions and the socio-environmental and geographical situatedness of work environments in the ancient Roman Empire contributed to the spatial spread of ancient cults. Using computational methods, the project examines how the occupational risks faced by inhabitants of the Roman Empire influenced their choice of preferred cults. The main methods used in the project include spatial analysis, predictive modelling, statistics, and the analysis of geocoded data, especially of epigraphic and archaeological origin. MAIN JOB CONTENT Framework Conducting research in cooperation with the project team. Publishing research results in academic journals and disseminating ongoing research findings at conferences and other public events. Independent work as well as collaboration with other members of the project team. Content of the research activity: Mathematical modeling and statistical data analysis. Evaluating data as potential predictors explaining the spatial distribution of archaeological or epigraphic finds (e.g., analysis of variance, correlation, regression, maximum entropy models). WE REQUEST Professional education, qualifications and experience Ph.D. in mathematics/statistics or a relevant related field. If the Ph.D. has not yet been obtained, candidates may apply under the condition that the degree will be completed no later than during the spring semester 2026. Specialization in statistical analysis and mathematical modeling is required. Experience with publishing a scientific article. Language skills English at level B2 required; C1 is an advantage. Knowledge of Czech or Slovak spoken language is an advantage. Department The Laboratory for the Experimental Research of Religion (LEVYNA) is an interdisciplinary, collaborative team of experimentalists tackling the evolution and functioning of human cognitive mechanisms facilitating religious cognition, behaviour, and institutions. We value open science, collegiality, and cooperation. Martin Lang is the director of LEVYNA and the PI of the CREDO project. His work lies at the intersection between the humanities and the cognitive and behavioural sciences, combining laboratory experiments with field studies to investigate how the human mind creates cultural niches and functions in them.
