Founded in 1993, Ardabil University of Medical Sciences is a public medical university in the capital of Ardabil province, in north-western Iran near the border with Azerbaijan. 
The university’s bachelor of medicine, bachelor of surgery (MBBS) course meets international standards, and its qualifications are recognised internationally.
The university is organised into six faculties, including medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and midwifery, and health.
Courses on offer include: anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, microbiology, pharmacology, forensic medicine, community medicine, clinical medicine, medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, psychiatry, radiology and allied health sciences.
To accommodate international students, the language of instruction in many of the courses is English.
The Ardabil University of Medical Sciences has a number of international partnerships, among them several with universities in Turkey, Azerbaijan and Malaysia.
In addition to its main Ardabil campus, there are two academic units in other cities of Ardabil province. The institution provides several academic and non-academic facilities and services to students, as well as administrative services.

Your personal sphere of influence:

The Chin Research Group at the Department of Functional Materials and Catalysis at the Faculty of Chemistry develops advanced porous materials (MOF and COF) for sensing, energy conversion and catalysis.

This PhD project aims to control the growth, alignment, and assembly of framework materials using external fields (electric, magnetic, or flow) to create structured, anisotropic, and multifunctional materials. By coupling field-driven orientation with compositional design, the project will reveal how directional control over framework domains influences charge transport, optical response, and catalytic performance.  Applications include enhanced electrochemical sensing, field-responsive coatings, and energy-harvesting architectures. The candidate will use advanced fabrication, microscopy, and spectroscopy techniques, and work within an interdisciplinary team spanning materials chemistry, surface science, and applied physics.

The position is embedded in the Vienna Doctoral School in Chemistry (DoSChem), Austria’s largest graduate network in chemical sciences, providing training, mentoring, and networking in a world-class research environment. You will join a vibrant and international research environment within the Vienna Doctoral School in Chemistry (DoSChem) – Austria’s largest doctoral training program in chemistry. DoSChem brings together more than 200 doctoral students and over 50 PIs, fostering interdisciplinary and curiosity-driven research.

The contract duration is 3 years with a preliminary limitation of 1,5 years and will automatically be extended to 3 years unless the employer hands in a non-extension declaration after 12 months. An extension up to a total of 4 years is then possible provided the excellent performance of the candidate.

Your future tasks:

You actively participate in research, teaching & administration, which means you:


	Synthesize and characterize MOF/COF/HOF materials and composites
	Investigate field-assisted growth and assembly using electric, magnetic, or electrohydrodynamic stimuli
	Fabricate structured and patterned films for sensing, photonic and energy applications
	Correlate orientation, morphology, and functionality using microscopy and spectroscopy
	Contribute to publications, conferences, and collaborative projects
	Participate in mentoring and teaching activities within the department
	Hold courses independently within the scope of the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement.
	Contribute to the administration and smooth running of the research group
	Take on administrative tasks in research, teaching and administration. 
	We expect you to finalize your dissertation agreement within 12-18 months.
	You work on your dissertation and its completion.


This is part of your personality:


	Master’s degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, or related discipline (grade of at least 2 in Austrian system / GPA ≥ 3.5/4)
	Strong background in inorganic or materials chemistry
	Experience in the basic handling of DNA or peptides is an advantage.
	Experience in materials synthesis and characterization is a must. (MOF/COF synthesis or colloidal assembly is an advantage)
	Evidence of scientific writing and publications is a plus.
	Excellent communication and data presentation skills
	Fluent in English (German is an advantage)

About us

Whilst genes provide the initial template for the nervous system, environmental experiences can create life-long changes in brain structure. We investigate how the brain forms during embryonic development and early life. Understanding brain development will not only inform us about individual variability - why are we different from each other - but also about the origin of pathological conditions such as autism spectrum disorder and schizophrenia.

Our centre is committed to educating the public through a range of forums and education programmes. We are led by Professor Oscar Marín, who is also Director of the MRC Centre for Neurodevelopmental Disorders.

About the role

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join the Kostadinov lab to investigate how the cerebellum collaborates with the rest of the brain in the learning and execution of learned, goal-directed behaviours.

Successful applicants should have a PhD in Neuroscience or related subject with a specific preference for candidates with a background in rodent (ideally mouse) behavioural, neurophysiology, and systems-level analysis. Other relevant biomedical background, such as medical training and experience with fMRI analysis, are highly desirable.

The candidate will lead a research program aiming to map the organizational logic of connections between the cerebellum and brain regions involved in reward- and punishment-based learning, uncover shared activity patterns in these long-range circuits, and define causal contributions of the cerebellar activity patterns and wiring to computations in partner regions and to behaviour. Expertise in rodent behavioural training, population level electrophysiological recordings in behaving animals, optogenetics and chemogenetics, and analysis of neurophysiological data are crucial for the successful candidate.

As some of the founding members of Kostadinov laboratory, the successful candidate will have to opportunity to be intimately involved in the design, execution, and analysis of the research project. They will also receive regular career mentorship and advice from the lab’s supervisor. The applicant will also have the opportunity to collaborate with and mentor PhD students working in the lab, and they will present their findings at regularly at domestic and international scientific conferences. Ultimately, their findings will be published as scientific papers in high-quality research journals.

This is a full time post, and you will be offered a fixed term contract until 31/12/2027.

About you

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria


	PhD in neuroscience or related subjects (including quantitative sciences such as engineering, mathematics, or physics)*
	Experience with rodent behavioural training and analysis in appetitive or aversive conditioning tasks.
	Experience with rodent surgical techniques for neurophysiology and activity manipulation experience (e.g. cannula implantation).
	Experience with recording and analyzing neurophysiological signals in awake behaving rodents using e.g. extracellular electrodes, imaging, or patch-clamp electrophysiology.
	Experience with manipulations of neural activity during behaviour using optogenetics and / or chemogenetics.
	Strong programming skills in Python or Matlab.


Desirable criteria


	Additional biomedical experience such as medical training and working with fMRI data
	Strong communication skills and passion to disseminate research findings, including a track record of writing and publishing scientific articles.
	A willingness to problem-solve and execute experiments and analysis independently.
	An ability to work collaboratively as part of a research team and share expertise with fellow researchers.
	Experience of immunofluorescence and fluorescent imaging systems.
