Position overview The School of Literature, Languages and Linguistics (SLLL) is seeking to enhance the successful teaching program and strong research profile of the Centre for Classical Studies through the appointment of an Associate Lecturer. The successful candidate will have the ability to teach Ancient Greek and Latin at all levels and an active research agenda in any aspect of the languages and literature of Ancient Greece and Rome (this includes language pedagogy). They will be highly motivated, collegial, and collaborative, and expected to contribute to public engagement and service in the Centre and School. They will receive dedicated career development mentoring, including guidance in applying for research funding. The Centre for Classical Studies teaches three undergraduate majors – Ancient Greek, Latin, and Classical Studies (in translation) – covering Greek and Roman language, literature, history, art, culture, and society from the Bronze Age to the Early Middle Ages. The Centre houses the ANU Classics Museum, a collection of more than 600 artefacts from the ancient Mediterranean world, with a special focus on objects illustrating daily life. The Centre is focused on cultivating research strengths in areas that contribute to important areas of scholarly and public debate. We currently possess expertise in ancient science and technology, memory, gender, slavery, the environment, politics and government, and object-based learning and museum ethics. We particularly welcome applications from candidates who can extend the Centre’s research expertise in new directions. The Associate Lecturer, Classics has been established with the support of Emeritus Professor Elizabeth Minchin OAM FAHA, the Kudos Foundation, and ANU Classics donors through the ANU Classics Endowment fund. Emeritus Professor Elizabeth Minchin has contributed many years of dedicated engagement and leadership in Classical Studies at ANU. She is committed, as is the Kudos Foundation to supporting the teaching of Ancient Greek and Latin in Australia, strengthening Ancient Greek and Latin teaching for ANU Classics students and creating opportunities for summer study tours.
