About Alverno College

Basic information and contact details for Alverno College

Alverno College is a private liberal arts college located close to the city of Milwaukee in the state of Wisconsin, USA.

Traditionally a women’s-only college, Alverno is still single-sex at undergraduate level, although co-educational in its postgraduate studies.

The university’s academic programmes are arranged into 4 different schools, namely the School of Business, School of Nursing, School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Education. Given that Alverno was originally Alverno Teacher’s College in 1935, having first been founded in 1887, it’s no surprise that today the university still holds a special focus on teacher training.

Unusually, the university does not use a standard numerical or letter-based grading system, but instead a narrative grading system. This means that instead of a student receiving a Grade Point Average or a single letter grade, they will instead be given a written assessment regarding their ability and the quality of their work.

This is intended to allow students and employers to have a greater understanding of their academic strengths and weaknesses.

In terms of facilities, whilst the university does indeed offer accommodation for students on campus, many prefer to live in private residences. In addition, Alverno provides childcare facilities for mature students who may have children. Alverno also has competitive sports teams playing softball, baseball, soccer and tennis, among other things.
