Established in 1938, Alexandria University in Egypt was originally known as Farouk University and operated as a satellite body of Fuad University (which would later become Cairo University).
Alexandria University became an independent institution in 1942 and renamed following the Egyptian Revolution of 1952.
Now a public university, Alexandria is home to 150,000 full-time students, making it the second largest university in the country. It also caters for more than 16,000 part-time undergraduates and close to 5,000 international students, with over 8,000 academic staff, over half of whom hold a PhD.
The seven original university faculties comprised Agriculture, Medicine, Arts, Commerce, Engineering, Law and Science, which have grown over the years to its current total of 23. Newer specialisms such as Tourism and Sports Education are included in its structure.
Alumni of Alexandria University include scientists, politicians, film directors and the first Egyptian Nobel Laureate to be recognised in a scientific discipline.
The university’s official colours are white and blue.
Alexandria itself is Egypt’s second largest city, its cultural capital and a major economic centre within the region. Known as the ‘pearl of the Mediterranean’, its coastal location also makes it a tourist hotspot

We focus particularly on the areas of reinforcement learning, interactive learning, and deep probabilistic models. While modern reinforcement learning (RL) has achieved remarkable success, it remains limited when applied to complex, open-ended, or poorly defined environments. Two of the most critical bottlenecks in contemporary AI are sample inefficiency, often caused by the lack of intelligent, structured exploration, and the "reward engineering" problem, where designing an explicit scalar reward function that captures desired behavior is incredibly difficult or impossible. Furthermore, as AI systems are deployed in more complex environments, the challenges of AI alignment (ensuring systems behave according to human preferences) and constrained learning (adhering to strict safety, legal, or physical boundaries) become important. This position is dedicated to addressing these core challenges by advancing the frontiers of Inverse Reinforcement Learning (IRL), exploration, and safe/aligned AI. Your future tasks: You actively participate in research, teaching & administration, which means: You will contribute to academic research projects in the above-mentioned areas. You will work on scientific articles and publish your research results. You will participate in academic conferences to present your research. We expect you to conclude your dissertation agreement within 12 months. You will work on your dissertation and bring it to completion. Criteria Qualifications A PhD in a discipline relevant to the Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences, or equivalent experience, and a sustained record of academic achievement and standing appropriate to a senior academic leadership role. Academic Leadership and Academic Quality Demonstrated experience providing academic leadership in higher education, particularly in areas relating to academic quality, assessment, standards, and/or curriculum oversight. Strong understanding of assurance of learning, constructive alignment, moderation, and standards-based assessment. Experience contributing to academic governance processes, including programme review, accreditation, quality assurance, assessment governance, or policy implementation. Ability to identify and respond to academic quality risks, including issues relating to consistency, equity, assessment validity, and student achievement. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across disciplines and influence academic peers through expertise, credibility, and relationship-building. Excellent strategic, analytical, communication, and advisory skills, including the ability to provide clear academic advice to committees and senior leaders. Teaching and Curriculum Significant experience in tertiary teaching and curriculum development at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level. Demonstrated commitment to high-quality, equitable, and evidence-informed teaching and assessment practice. Research and Scholarship An established programme of scholarship or research with outputs appropriate to career stage and discipline. Evidence of engagement with contemporary scholarship relating to teaching, learning, assessment, professional practice, or disciplinary research. Citizenship and Service Experience engaging with external community members, industries, government, professional bodies or other stakeholders to disseminate research and create opportunities.
