Ağrı İbrahim Çeçen University is a public university located in Ağrı, eastern Turkey.
Established by law in 2007 as Ağrı Dağı (‘Mount Ararat’) University, it was renamed in 2008 in honour of businessman and philanthropist İbrahim Çeçen. Since its establishment, it has developed from a small group of faculties and schools into a multidisciplinary university comprising more than 10 faculties, multiple vocational schools, a graduate education institute and several application and research centres.
Located in Ağrı, a city close to Turkey’s border with Iran, it has developed a prominent green campus with a wide range of modern facilities. These include a sports hall, fitness centre, football pitch, stadium, semi-Olympic swimming pool, bowling alley, tennis courts and dedicated cycling and walking routes, alongside teaching facilities and student accommodation. Much of the campus was financed and developed by İbrahim Çeçen, whose contribution has played an important role in the university’s growth.
It offers programmes across a broad range of subject areas including education, economics and administrative sciences, science and literature, health sciences, medicine, pharmacy, engineering, fine arts, Islamic studies and sport sciences. Its vocational schools extend provision into applied and technical fields, while the Turkish and Foreign Language Teaching Application and Research Centre (TÖMER) provides opportunities for Turkish-language education.
The university also has a strong focus on women’s studies and gender-related issues through its Women’s Studies Application and Research Centre. The centre promotes interdisciplinary research on gender, organises seminars and public awareness activities, and supports initiatives addressing women’s rights, education, employment and social participation.
