Adıyaman University was founded in 2006 through a merger of the vocational schools and faculties of İnönü University, Gaziantep University and Harran University that were located in the province of Adıyaman.

The city of Adıyaman in south-eastern Turkey has a history that goes back to some of the earliest human settlements. Many archaeological and historical sites show traces of the civilisations that have come and gone. 

Adıyaman University has four campuses over which are found more than a dozen faculties, a conservatory and other education and research centres. It hosts more than 17,000 students, including a large number of international students. Adıyaman offers degrees at undergraduate and postgraduate level. 

The faculties include: medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, medicine, education, sciences, engineering, architecture, economics and administrative sciences, Islamic studies, agricultural sciences, tourism, fine arts, health sciences, agricultural sciences, and technology. 

Among the courses students can take are: dentistry, pharmacy, education, archaeology, biology, physics, English language and literature, Turkish language and literature, chemistry, mathematics, history of art, sociology, economics, business administration, Islamic studies, environmental engineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, metallurgy and materials engineering, agricultural engineering, nursing, midwifery, medicine, and tourism management.

Adıyaman has been noted for its work to support disabled students.

The university participates in national and international exchange programmes, including Erasmus+, Farabi, and Mevlana. It also participates in international research projects.
