The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Helsinki invites applications for the position of ASSISTANT PROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / PROFESSOR as of 1.8.2026 or as agreed. The field of the position is the Development of health care services. The language of instruction is Finnish. The position may be filled as assistant professor, associate professor or professor, depending on the candidates’ merits and career stage. Common selection criteria of the Faculty of Medicine Assistant / associate professor An appointee to the position of assistant/associate professor in the tenure track system shall hold a doctoral degree in health sciences or a relevant field, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have the teaching skills necessary for the position. In addition, applicants for assistant professorships shall demonstrate their ability and motivation for an academic career through publications and other means. The degree requirement must be met by the end of the application deadline. When considering applicants’ qualifications, account shall be taken not only of their research work and teaching qualifications, but also of their success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and other international experience. Professor An appointee to a professorship shall hold a doctoral degree in health sciences or a relevant field and have top level scholarly qualifications, experience in the supervision of scientific research, as well as the ability to provide top-level research-based teaching and to supervise theses and dissertations. In addition, the appointee shall present documentation of international cooperation in the field of research that he or she represents. Holders of professorships shall also have the skills necessary for serving as an academic leader. The degree requirement must be met by the end of the application deadline. When considering the applicant’s qualifications, attention shall be given to scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce teaching material, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a demonstration of teaching skills as well as the applicant’s participation in doctoral education. Account shall also be taken of the applicant’s activity in the scientific community, success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and international elected positions as well as leadership and interaction skills. To ensure that the applicant’s ability to supervise theses and dissertations meets the requirements of the Faculty of Medicine, he or she must have completed the supervision of at least one doctoral dissertation. The requirement for a supervised dissertation must be met by the end of the application deadline. Duties The assistant professor, associate professor or professor will be responsible for developing a degree programme leading to the completion of a master’s degree in health care, providing teaching and supervision in the programme, and contributing to the development of doctoral education in health sciences. The appointee will provide instruction particularly in the Master’s Programme in the Development of Health Care Services and, if necessary, will teach Faculty courses compulsory to all students. The appointee will also be responsible for research broadly related to the field of the professorship and the development of a discipline at the University of Helsinki. Applicants must provide evidence of their involvement in health care development projects and relevant professional networks. The duties associated with the professorship will also include administrative tasks. The professor’s duties also include carrying out and supervising scientific research, following developments in research and participating in societal interaction as well as national and international cooperation in the field. In addition, the professor’s duties include other tasks assigned to the unit. The appointee and HUS Helsinki University Hospital may negotiate over a suitable secondary position. Trial period of six months will be applied. Requirements for language skills According to the Government Decree on Universities, holders of teaching and research positions must be proficient in the language of instruction. The language of instruction is Finnish. In addition, the appointee must have at least satisfactory oral and written skills in Swedish. To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must also have good English skills. Salary  The salary will be based on level 7 (assistant professor) and levels 8-10 (professor) of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance. The successful candidate will lead research at the interface of oceanography, climate science, and data science, with a strong emphasis on translating scientific evidence into actionable information for policymakers. The role will involve the assessment and improvement of sea‑level rise projections for Ireland, integration of observational datasets, and the co‑development of interactive data products to support national climate adaptation and resilience planning. The postdoctoral researcher will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of oceanographers, statisticians and policy stakeholders, including close collaboration with the Marine Institute and other national agencies.
