We are seeking a highly motivated Marine Ecologist to join our collaborative research group at the University of Southampton. This position is funded by the NERC C-FLOOR highlight topic and offers a unique opportunity to investigate how physical disturbance, specifically bottom trawling, influences the capacity of marine sediments to act as net sources or sinks of carbon, nutrients and greenhouse gases. Under the direction of Prof Martin Solan and Prof Jasmin Godbold you will play a central role in this NERC funded project. Specifically, you will undertake a series of manipulative laboratory experiments and field surveys (using sediment profile imaging technology) to link changes in carbon, nutrient stoichiometry and greenhouse gas dynamics with the effects of trawl gears, fishing intensity, sediment types, species composition, and seasonal timing. This position is highly collaborative requiring active engagement with partner institutions across the UK to ensure integrated project outcomes. The role requires that you take a leading role in dissemination of novel findings through high-impact, peer reviewed academic publications while continuously developing advanced technical skills and research competencies within a world-class marine science environment. The successful candidate must hold a PhD (or equivalent) in Marine Biology, Marine Ecology, or a closely related discipline by the start date. The candidate should have a strong background in benthic invertebrate community ecology and experience with laboratory experiments, image analysis and the interpretation of complex ecological data. Furthermore, the candidate is expected to have a proven track record in written and oral communication skills with a commitment to collaborative, team-based science. Full time, continuing position, located in Narrabri at the University of Sydney Plant Breeding Institute Work on a large scale, industry leading university farm supporting commercial grain production, research and cutting edge agricultural innovation Base Salary $90,155 - $95,259 + 17% superannuation About the opportunity We are currently seeking a Senior Farm Hand to support the day to day farming operations at the University of Sydney's Narrabri Farms, contributing to commercial grain production, research, digital agriculture and teaching activities. Working closely with the Manager, Farm Operations and a small technical team, this role plays a key part in ensuring farm activities are delivered safely, efficiently and in line with best practice for the region. Your key responsibilities will be to: work closely with the Manager, Farm Operations and technical officers to support farming operations support the implementation of management plans for the Narrabri Farms operate and maintain farm machinery and equipment to support grain, research and teaching activities coordinate and liaise with contractors and consultants as required assist with field operations, demonstrations, field days and seminars support other farm operations and technical activities as required. The successful candidate will join a high-performing research team working at the intersection of wireless communications, signal processing, delay-Doppler communications and adaptive beamforming. The role offers the opportunity to work closely with researchers at Macquarie University and the University of Melbourne, and to contribute to a project in secure, long-range underwater acoustic communications. The appointee will undertake research in waveform and algorithm design, modelling and simulation, and performance evaluation for challenging underwater acoustic communication environments. The role will also contribute to technical reporting, publications and collaborative research activities across the project team.
