The go-ahead for a university to be built in Texas was first given in 1839, but a series of set-backs meant the University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin) was not established until almost a half century later. It was 1883 when UT Austin first opened its doors, with one building, eight professors and 221 students.

Today, UT Austin is a world-renowned higher education, research-intensive institution, serving more than 51,000 students annually with a teaching faculty of around 3,000.

It comprises 18 top-ranked colleges and schools, 17 libraries, seven museums and one 307-foot tower – the most iconic building on campus. 

Possessing a creative and entrepreneurial spirit, as well as a strong community focus, the university states its core purpose as being "to transform lives for the benefit of society".

UT Austin has an alumni numbering close to half a million individuals. Among them are the award-winning actors Matthew McConaughey and Marcia Gay Harden, film director Robert Rodriguez, and journalists Bill Moyers and Walter Cronkite.

With Austin being the ‘Live Music Capital of the World’, students can take advantage of a multitude of arts and cultural opportunities on campus and in the wider locale. More than 200 music venues exist in the city, as well as a thriving film scene and year-round sunshine.

Several global tech companies (Apple, Samsung and IBM among them) have major operations in the area and Austin is, according to Forbes magazine, one of the country’s best cities for tech startups. 

The university is also home to one of the largest college stadiums in the US. Its football teams, known as the Longhorns, are represented by a mascot called Bevo, a Longhorn steer that is said to embody the pride and tradition of Texas football.

Description We are seeking Post-Doctoral Associates who are passionate about Data Science, with an emphasis in Computational Social Science, with a starting date of September 1, 2026. Some of the possible research topics include: (i) social media analysis, (ii) collaboration and teamwork, (iii) gender inequality, (iv) diversity, (v) online controlled experiments, and (vi) network science. The ideal candidate is self-motivated and hard-working with a PhD in Data Science, Computational Social Science, Computer Science, or Information Science, with no more than five years post receipt of the PhD. The position requires experience with at least one of the following: Data Science, Machine Learning, Computational Social Science, Big Data. Relevant skills could include statistical analysis, data management and collection, causal inference, network analysis, graph theory, visualizations, and online tool development. Experience in conducting online controlled experiments is also desired, but not required. Excellent communication skills in English, ability to work in multidisciplinary teams, and scientific creativity are essential. Selected candidates will spend half their time on collaborative research with Bedoor AlShebli, an Assistant Professor in Computational Social Science in the Social Science Division at NYUAD, and half their time on independent research. The selected candidate will receive an appointment for three years. The position provides salary higher than internationally competitive rates for Post-Doctoral / Research Engineering / Research Associate positions, in addition to substantial benefits (generous housing, transportation and travel allowances, educational subsidies for children), together with full health insurance and retirement contributions. This position will focus on understanding the ecological roles and potential applications of these microorganisms in agricultural systems, specifically for improving soil health, nutrient cycling, and sustainability. The successful candidate will conduct cutting-edge research on how microalgae and cyanobacteria can enhance soil fertility, optimize nutrient availability, and contribute to more sustainable agricultural practices. Job Responsibilities Study the biology, ecology, and physiology of microalgae and cyanobacteria, particularly their role in soil nutrient cycling, nitrogen fixation, and carbon sequestration. Investigate the mechanisms through which these microorganisms interact with soil environments and plants, particularly in relation to enhancing soil fertility, water retention, and microbial diversity. Develop and optimize biofertilizers or biostimulants based on cyanobacteria and microalgae to improve soil health and agricultural productivity. Study the effects of these microorganisms on crop growth, soil nutrient availability, and plant-microbe interactions. Design and execute laboratory, greenhouse, and field experiments to assess the efficacy of microalgae and cyanobacteria in improving soil quality and plant performance. Analyze experimental data using appropriate statistical methods and communicate findings through scientific publications. Work closely with researchers from other disciplines, such as microbiology, soil science, and agriculture, to integrate findings into broader agricultural and environmental research efforts. Present research findings at conferences and collaborate with industry partners or stakeholders on practical applications of research. Mentor graduate students, interns, or research assistants involved in related projects. Qualifications: Ph.D. in Microbiology, Environmental Biology, Soil Science, or a related field. Strong background in microbial ecology, particularly with experience in cyanobacteria or microalgae biology. Experience with experimental design and data analysis in both laboratory and field settings. Familiarity with agricultural microbiology, plant-microbe interactions, or biofertilizer development is highly desirable.
