Founded in 1856, the University of Maryland is a public research university and the largest university in the Washington Metropolitan Area. The university has close funding and institutional links to the capital – receiving research funding from the National Institutes of Health, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa), the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the Department of Homeland Security.

It belongs to the Big Ten Conference, one of the oldest collegiate athletic conferences in the United States that includes the flagship public university in each of 11 states stretching from New Jersey to Nebraska. The membership also places the university within the Committee of Institutional Cooperation, an academic consortium of Big Ten universities and the University of Chicago, whose members generated more than $10 billion in research expenditure in 2012.

The 1,250 acre campus, which started out as the 428 acres of an old sugar plantation, has redbrick Georgian buildings, a large central lawn called McKeldin Mall, and enough plants and trees to be designated a botanical garden. Morrill Hall, built in the 1890s, is the oldest structure still in use today.

Almost 40,000 students on one of either 100 undergraduate majors and 120 graduate programmes join a number of notable alumni, including House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, Google co-founder Sergey Brin, The Muppets creator Jim Henson, The Wire creator David Simon and Seinfeld co-creator Larry David.

Nobel prizewinners are also among the staff, with John C. Mather, a Nasa researcher and physics professor, sharing the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2006 and Thomas C. Schelling sharing the Nobel Prize for Economics in 2005 – with two more faculty staff and two alumni being awarded in the past century.

The college’s future was not always secured, and indeed the institution went bankrupt from 1864 to 1866 before reopening a year later with 11 students. The first woman earned her bachelor’s degree in 1919, and the first African American student graduated in 1952.

The University of Maryland also hosts one of the largest communities of language scientists in North America, including more than 200 faculty, researchers and graduate students, who collectively comprise the Maryland Language Science Center.

The research programme is called “Metals for a Green Ireland: Developing innovative mineral systems and exploration tools” and is focussed on the provision of the critical and strategic raw materials required for the green transition, with a focus on sedimentary basins. The research group will initially comprise 13 members from senior research fellows to PhD students, involves field sites on three continents and collaboration with industry and other stakeholders. This Research Fellow will lead a work package “Georesources and Society” and will be co-supervised by Assoc. Prof. Geertje Schuitema, School of Business. Visualising, interpreting, and utilising the sub-surface is a fundamental skill in the geosciences. Social scientists are experts in risk perceptions, risk communication and decision-making. The aim of this interdisciplinary project is to understand how different stakeholders perceive the subsurface, how they assess the risks of sub-surface usage (e.g. mining or geothermal energy) and how they use these perceptions, including potential biases, to form attitudes and make decisions. In Ireland, what type of use of the sub-surface is acceptable, by which stakeholders and in which contexts? Which values underpin these decisions? Finally, what kind of information do stakeholders need to have to feel confident in the use of the sub-surface for georesource purposes? The aim of this project is to provide empirical data that facilitates decision making. The results of this will feed into the design of interventions that aim to increase trust and confidence of stakeholders in decisions involving georesources. The purpose of the role is to deliver a specific research project. The role allows the Research Fellow the professional development opportunity to demonstrate the capacity for independent and self-directed research and scholarship and the management of a research team. The role allows the Fellow to assemble a portfolio of independent achievement and render themselves competitive for tenured academic positions or senior scientific roles in industry. In addition to the Principal Duties and Responsibilities listed below, the successful candidate will also carry out the following duties specific to this project: Lead the day-to-day management of the project including data management, ethics approvals and delivery of milestones and deliverables Use appropriate methodologies e.g. empirical surveys, interviews, focus groups to collect data for analyses Analyse data using appropriate research analysis techniques and analysis software Build and maintain appropriate relationships with other academic researchers, funders, industry and government officials. About the Role We are looking for a Research Fellow to help develop new digital tools, including digital models, shadows and twins, that reduce carbon emissions in transport. Working with a wide range of experts from universities and industries across the UK, you will help create a “digital twinning” system that links air and road systems to support cleaner, more efficient and cost-effective logistics. The role involves building computer simulations and digital infrastructure using right-time data to test low-carbon and green technologies, and to provide evidence to guide future transport and energy planning. This position offers the chance to make a real contribution to the UK’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. About You Applicants should have a doctorate degree or equivalent (PhD/EngD) in Engineering, Manufacturing, Transport, Computer Science, Data Science, Sustainability, or a closely related subject, or be close to completing their qualification. The team Reporting to the Team Lead, Animal Breeding, this role sits within the Biological Services team in the Research Infrastructure Function.
