Founded in 1900 on the vision set down by politician and statesman Joseph Chamberlain, the University of Birmingham prides itself on a longstanding tradition of innovation and progressive initiatives.

The university was a founding member of the National Union of Students, and the first in the country to be built on a campus model, incorporate a medical school and offer degrees in dentistry.

It was also the country’s first civic or ‘redbrick’ university, with students accepted regardless of their background or religion.

The modern university is home to 26,000 students, 5,000 of them international. With 31% of its academic staff also from overseas, Birmingham lays claim to one of the most diverse campuses in the UK and encourages a global outlook. Students can take advantage of a number of opportunities to internationalise their degree: around 450 undergraduates complete a year abroad as part of their course.

Birmingham’s main campus is located in the Edgbaston area of the city, where it houses the Joseph Chamberlain Memorial Clock Tower (the world’s tallest free-standing clock), and the Barber Institute of Fine Arts, which opened in 1939 and exhibits original work by Van Gogh, Picasso and Monet.

It is also the location of one of the largest medical schools in Europe and the place where pacemakers and plastic heart valves were developed, where allergy vaccines were pioneered and where the first clinical trials of the contraceptive pill outside the USA took place.

Today, the university cites nanotechnology, gene therapy, virtual reality and robotics as being at the forefront of its research priorities.

At various times, it has been home to eight Nobel laureates and its alumni includes the former British prime ministers Stanley Baldwin and Neville Chamberlain.

Despite Birmingham’s industrial roots, the city is one of the greenest in the UK, with more miles of canals than Venice. Popular with foodies, it is second only to London in terms of the number of Michelin star restaurants it boasts and, with almost 40% of its population below the age of 25, the city has one of the youngest populations in Europe.

The Singapore Teaching and Academic Research Talent (START) Scheme is co-funded by the Ministry of Education (MOE) and SIT to encourage and support outstanding young Singaporeans interested in pursuing an academic career at SIT. The Applied Research Fellowship aims to provide doctoral candidates who are about to complete or have recently completed their studies an opportunity to engage in advanced training and/or research at an overseas university for one year. Besides financial support, awardees will also receive academic mentorship. Upon completion of the Fellowship, awardees will be considered for Assistant Professorship. Eligibility and Selection Criteria Singapore citizen Doctoral candidates who have recently completed or are about to complete their studies in a discipline under the supported areas for START below Excellent academic record plus a high degree of proficiency and motivation for selected research area Have been accepted or have applied for a postdoctoral training at a leading overseas university in a research area that is aligned with SIT’s supported areas A keen interest in an academic career Value of Fellowship The Fellowship provides: Monthly stipend Overseas maintenance allowance Return economy airfare Conference and fieldwork grants Overseas medical insurance Fellows will also each be assigned a SIT faculty mentor throughout their post-doctoral training and have opportunities to participate in faculty development programmes. The fellowship is tenable for one year. On an exception basis, a two-year programme may be supported. Service Commitment One year for every year of sponsorship. Application Process Applications are open throughout the year via the various links below. Applications received before 15 January 2026 will be considered for the 2026 intake. Interview by the respective clusters for shortlisted applicants will be conducted throughout the year.   Final Interview by the Panel for shortlisted applicants for the 2026 intake will commence in Mid-March to End April 2026. Supported Areas for START - Business, Communication and Design Financial and Sustainability Accounting: The measurement, reporting, and analysis of an organisation's financial performance alongside its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) and carbon footprint. Integrating traditional financial accounting principles with sustainability considerations to provide stakeholders with a more comprehensive view of a company's long-term value creation. Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE): The planning, management, and execution of business events, corporate gatherings, and large-scale conferences. This field is a key segment of the tourism and hospitality industry, requiring expertise in event management, business tourism, marketing, logistics, and stakeholder engagement.

In the Student Hub, we are the first point of contact for students with queries during their time at the University of Southampton. Our role is to take ownership of enquiries, providing accurate, timely solutions and consistent advice through both in‑person and digital contact methods. By offering high‑quality support and guidance, we enable students to focus on their studies and make positive memories that will last a lifetime. Working within a supportive and collaborative core team, you will cover a wide range of topics and develop a strong understanding of the University of Southampton and the wider higher education sector, while building your customer service, communication and problem‑solving skills. You will respond to enquiries through face‑to‑face interactions, telephone calls and digital channels, taking responsibility for resolving issues wherever possible. This includes using sound judgement to triage enquiries and escalate more complex or sensitive cases to specialist services, ensuring students receive clear, accurate and consistent advice. About the role As a Student Hub Advisor, you will support students across a broad range of topics, including academic administration, student fees and funding, accommodation, graduation and ID cards. Working as part of a knowledgeable team, you will gain exposure to a variety of services and processes, with ongoing opportunities to learn, build confidence and develop your skills, supported by experienced colleagues. This is a full‑time, permanent position working on a shift pattern between 12.00 and 20.00, Monday to Friday. The role is primarily based at the Highfield Campus, with a requirement to work across all Student Hub locations in Southampton and at Winchester School of Art. As a student‑facing service, the role is delivered entirely on site and there is no option for hybrid working or working from home. About you You will enjoy working in a busy, customer‑focused environment and be committed to delivering a positive experience for students. You will be a confident communicator, both written and verbal, comfortable engaging with students with a wide range of needs and experiences. You will bring strong customer service skills, confidence in using multiple systems accurately and efficiently, and an aptitude for learning new systems and internal processes. Experience of working in higher education or student support services is desirable but not essential.
