After increasing its participation to 12 universities in Times Higher Education's World University Rankings 2026, Hungarian higher education has recorded its best-ever performance in the WUR Subject Rankings.
New entrants and notable improvements include:
- Semmelweis University entering the prestigious world top 200 list for medical and health fields, moving up into the 176-200 band
- Pázmány Péter Catholic University establishing itself as a new entrant in the top 401+ band for law and the top 800 band for arts and humanities
- Eötvös Loránd University moving into the world top 500 for life sciences
Of Hungary's improved performance, Phil Baty, THE's chief global affairs officer and chief operating officer, said:
“Hungary has excelled itself with some landmark achievements.
“I saw Semmelweis University's pioneering work at the European Universities Summit in Budapest in 2025, where I joined international delegates on its campus to learn more about its leadership in the field of medicine.
“Another eye-catching success is earned by Pázmány Péter Catholic University – not only did it enter the overall world rankings for the first time this year, it has entered directly into the world top 401+ band for the law subject ranking and joins the top 800 for the arts and humanities subject ranking. And to complete a trio of success stories, Eötvös Loránd University also moved into the world top 500 for life sciences.
“The THE subject rankings are a rigorous and demanding international quality benchmark – using 17 separate performance indicators to judge world-class research universities against the best in the world for the teaching environment, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. So these breakthroughs are a real cause for national celebration.”
