A science PhD can be completed within 18 months

Supervisors should involve doctoral students with conducting, writing up and publishing experiments straight away, says Adrian Furnham

I have supervised around 30 PhD students and examined something like 100, in various different countries.

I failed two outright and passed another two with no changes; the rest mostly required minor revisions. As everyone knows, you are in a sense examining the supervisor because if the thesis is weak, it is as much the supervisor’s fault as the student’s – well, usually. In that regard, I should confess that a few of my PhD students dropped out before they got to the submission stage – but largely for domestic reasons.

I suggest that American readers have a stiff drink at this point before reading on. But here is my thesis based on all that personal experience: there is no reason a PhD student in the experimental sciences should not be able to complete after about 15-18 months.

Of course, this does depend a bit on the type of data to be collected and analysed. But what is a PhD thesis, after all? It is not a magnum opus. It is simply the demonstration of a mastery of research skills in a particular area. The question for the examiner is simply whether the student has mastered a particular literature and made a contribution to it.

That said, one important thing my own doctoral supervisor at the University of Oxford taught me was to not start by extensively and exhaustively “reading the literature” – because that got you to think like everyone did and repressed creativity. The other was that you could not fail a PhD which had been, in most part, published in a proper, peer-reviewed journal. When I submitted my thesis, half of the studies in it were published or under review. That was the criterion.

So that is the approach I take with my PhD students. In their first or second term, I get them involved in a study (or two) I am doing – helping to collect and analyse the data. As soon as this is completed, it is written up and submitted to a good journal, whereupon it is scrutinised by editors and reviewers. This means that the student, in effect, has multiple and often very well-qualified supervisors, standing them in good stead for their thesis defence.

Admittedly, almost none of my PhD students have ended up researching the topic they proposed, changing their interests as they progressed. And this can really delay things. But I still stand by my view that 18 months is plenty of time.

Some years ago, I had a clever, ambitious and energetic foreign PhD student. He came only with a first degree from his native (South American) country, but he had won a top scholarship. I have to admit that I did not take to him at first, but we soon bonded. He was smart, efficient and learnt quickly and enthusiastically: surely exactly what you want in a PhD student. We did studies on test anxiety, art preferences and the use of music to boost concentration, relax or change mood. We also did one on the relationship between personality and intelligence, which became the focus of his thesis. 

He wrote up his PhD to my complete satisfaction – with, I might add, about half a dozen of the studies published or in press – within about 18 months. But we had a problem. The university regulations did not allow him to submit until three years had elapsed. No one seemed to know why, but nor was anyone prepared to allow an exception. Two cynics suggested that the powers that be did not want to set a precedent that might lose them student fees.

So we continued to research together, doing studies and publishing them. He submitted the thesis at the first possible date and sailed through the viva with a few cosmetic changes that he fixed in a couple of hours.

He went on to become a successful academic, holding jobs in top universities in the US and UK simultaneously. He has a Google h-index of 88 and three of the papers submitted in his thesis now have more than 750 citations, according to Google Scholar. But, like so many, he ended up disillusioned and now works, very successfully, in business.

Was he exceptionally gifted? In some ways, but mostly he was just motivated, ambitious and pragmatic. I’ve never had another student who quite replicated his level of efficiency but I’ve had half a dozen of a similar general ability, and about four of them completed well within three years.

QED?

When I have recited this story to others, I have got a series of similar objections. The first is an attack on the discipline: “Gosh, psychology must be very simple – or its journals’ standards very lax – because this rate of productivity would be simply impossible in my noble ology, in the arts or the hard sciences. You really don’t understand what we do, do you?”

Bollocks, I respond!

The second objection is that I treat my students as unpaid (and possibly academically abused) research assistants. With that, I happily concur (except the bit in parentheses). The best way to learn research skills is by doing research. They should be collecting data, analysing it and writing it up, not fretting in a garret. Get them in the lab, with a team.

The third objection is that I have fundamentally misunderstood the nature and purpose of a doctorate. Really? For ages, there have been calls to reform the whole PhD process to be more “fit for purpose” – although no one seems to be sure exactly what that is.

For the answer, I refer you to paragraph four above. A PhD is a certificate of research skills.

A business school professor? What about required course work? Preparation for exams? Preliminary research. What the author describes does not resemble a reputable doctoral degree, not even a sufficient dissertation by itself which requires real preparation. Why>
To be fair to the OP, they are talking about a european PhD that has no coursework or exams, the European attitude being that if you still need to do coursework, you are not ready to start a PhD.
That is not true. A number of European countries do have coursework and exams. there is no single European "attitude."
May I politely pijnt out that most European PhD programs do not have heavy coursework as with the US model, focusing instead on independent research from day one. This works because a Master's degree is almost always a prerequisite for entry, meaning foundational and advanced classes are already completed

This is England. Not Europe. In most of Europe you cannot graduate without at least 5 years post undergraduate, with additional graduate level courses. England and Wales have always had an odd attitude towards PhD, as evidenced by this idiotic article Finish in 18 months and you will not on average at least be able to compete with counterparts around the world, both for breadth and depth of knowledge and research accomplishments. That is already the case with 3 years, far too short without a proper 2 years master This will be a recipe for disaster for those wanting to stay in academia and go abroad. It is simply setting them up to fail at the first hurdle
It pains me to agree with notorious troll graff, but I will in this case. Perhaps in Furnham's own discipline (psychology) the fruit hangs low, and thus the bar is set similarly low. This is not the case in most sciences. Experimental work is rarely ever a case of "set up an experiment, run it, quickly produce data, analyse data, publish findings" in a short timeframe. I think the fundamental issue here is that Furnham has a much diminished view of what a PhD is supposed to be and what holding the degree is supposed to signify. In many sciences, 15-18 months is only enough time to produce a single research note's worth of work (if you're lucky). Is that really the standard we set for a PhD? Is that sufficient work to demonstrate a doctorate? Is it enough time to be properly trained in how to conduct quality scientific research? To gain an advanced understanding of your particular niche? Perhaps in psychology. Not so in most other sciences, I think.

What a wierdo your are
I think the pathway the author of the article describes is good for a research-intense Masters degree. It produces exactly what is described, enhanced research skills. Also, it is suited for exceptionally intellectually mature and efficient students, like the one from South America he features. In my view, these exceptional PhD students should be allowed to graduate early, if there is clear evidence, such as papers peer-reviewed and accepted, which result from their PhD research. For the rest of us mortals a 3+ year PhD could, and, I think, should still be the time usually reserved to grow into an independent researcher. This involves not only lab experiments, data analysis and publishing skills, but the ability to 1) critically assess the body of research done before, 2) formulate a (partially) new problem, and 3) research a solution to that problem. And, importantly, make and rectify mistakes on the way. Although AI could speed up this process greatly, a human still needs to lead in 2) and 3). And it takes time to accumulate experience and grow into a lider.
This is an interesting article, and all the better for being based on the author's experience rather than his politics, whatever they may be. But, his doctoral supervisor at Oxford was wrong. Doctoral candidates should read the literature on their subject 'extensively' and, yes, depending on the nature of their topic 'exhaustively'. I meet all sorts of doctoral candidates who don't know the first thing about the literature on any subject, let alone the small corner that they are destined to occupy. This is a disaster. All part and parcel of the dumbing down of HE. But that's life at a middle-ranking university for you.
Just because a PhD *could* be done in 18 months doesn't mean it *should*. I'm definitely against the argument that PhDs should get longer. The mean actual length of completion globally seems to be n+1, where n is the number of years it is supposed to take in a given country, whether that be three or five or whatever. However, going shorter means there is much less time for mistakes, diversions and so on, surely a crucial part of the apprenticeship. It's worth noting that Prof Burnham has a citation record which is probably in the top 0.1% globally. Getting a PhD in 18 months has got to be in the same part of the distribution of completion times. For nearly all supervisors and students, it's out of reach, and that's fine.
Completely agree. (Coincidentally also a science PhD now in a Business School.) I've also seen a very able student having to wait to submit due to regs. Excessive time and words does not make a PhD better. The PhD model feels out of date in 2026 and if it isn't advanced it will head into an AI created black hole.
I hate to do exactly what the author has accused others of doing, but in my field (yes, a hard science), it takes over a year from the submission of a study to publication in a reputable journal, so I don't see how that fits with a student finishing with a peer reviewed publication (let alone several) within 18 months. The average experiment probably takes a couple of months, the average paper probably has 9 or 10 such experiments in it. That said, I think most of my students probably do end up producing most of the data that ends up in their thesis within an 18 month period, its just that most take some time getting to the place where they are able to do that.

Anyways, whether or not publication is required for a PhD very much depends on the country. In many mainland European countries it is necessary to have published to graduate, and in all countries, its the most important thing for a job in research (academic or industrial) afterwards.
I think you'll find that it is in most systems. Even if there isn't a hard rule it's an expectation, usually at least 2 publications as first author in good journals.
The statement that a PhD "is simply the demonstration of a mastery of research skills in a particular area" is the complete opposite of what a PhD traditionally has been, and certainly in my opinion ought to remain. You have PhDs in order for people to acquire and demonstrate the criticial and technical skill to be a successful, independent scientist. Not masster some skills in one area. There is no point at all in any PhD on these terms. Having said which - there are so many PhDs being minted right now, and the system usually can't bear for them to fail. So maybe a large number of PhDs could just as well be taught in 18 months. I'd like to see PhDs get better, though, rather than the whole business being devalued even further
I have mixed views about this article: on the one hand I commend the author for involving their PhD students in research as quickly as possible. On the other hand, they seem to overlook the importance of doing work that is independent and original, which is not an easy feat in three years, let alone 18 months.
There are many more skills a future scientist should learn. Bashing out data and publications in 18 months will not allow these skills to develop. Agree about a research intensive Masters point above. Also in biology you need to grow (probably for multiple generations) living things!
18 months!! Nowadays a PhD can be created on generative AI in about 18 minutes!
I guess this can be true if you work in a discipline where you can get away with publishing a swift superficial “proof” of your hypothesis based on data from a very small sample. Like claiming you have proved that “there is no reason a PhD student in the experimental sciences should not be able to complete after about 15-18 months” because… you once had one student who did it. “QED”
Did this Professor do a 1.5 year PhD? I guess not. Maybe better of course not! I guess he was not that great according to themselves. I pity their students to be honest. Total lack of pedagogy on this approach. I am not going to even comment on the lack of understanding on what it takes to do an experimental PhD in the STEM fields. Of course it could be a trolling approach in an effort either to attract attention to themselves or even for effectively initiating a discussion. Who knows ....
