The words of this week's First Impressions, the competition in which you have to identify the opening sentence of awell-known book, are taken from a chronicle of afamily's brutal murder:

The winner of last week's competition, who correctly identified Joseph Conrad's Under Western Eyes , is Betty Merridewof Mynachdy, Cardiff.
