Chair of Excellence in Quantum Science and Technology Call 2026 InstituteQ is opening two positions in its third call for the Chair of Excellence in Quantum Science and Technology. What is the Chair of Excellence Program? The chair of excellence program is designed to host international leading experts and eminent scholars at one of the host organizations at InstituteQ for a three-year term, and a cumulative commitment of 9–12 months. The chairs are expected to strengthen key scientific areas where InstituteQ already holds significant visibility and also to foster expertise and excellence in emerging areas. Currently, over 90 research groups participate in the operations of the institute (full list of research groups here). Focus areas include, but are not limited, to quantum materials (such as superconducting flat-band and two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals materials), quantum software and algorithms, and quantum devices (including solid state qubits, quantum circuits, quantum nanomechanics). Appointed chairs are expected to collaborate with InstituteQ research groups, present their work at InstituteQ colloquia, and deliver a lecture (either individually or as a guest lecturer) during their stay. Chair of Excellence call 2026 InstituteQ invites international leading experts and eminent scholars to apply for two positions as Chair of Excellence in Quantum Science and Technology. The call is open to both senior-level scientists and outstanding young researchers with a proven track record of excellence. InstituteQ actively promotes diversity in all its forms; researchers with underrepresented and historically marginalized identities, particularly relating to gender, are strongly encouraged to apply. Candidates are expected to enrich strategic focus areas of member organization at InstituteQ and additionally or alternatively initiate and/or strengthen emerging themes of high relevance and of candidate’s interest. One position is hosted at Aalto University and the other at the University of Jyväskylä (JYU). Each position includes a EUR 60 000 award* distributed over the three-year period 2026-2028, including EUR 15 000 travel grant (EUR 5 000/year). The Chair is expected to conduct at least 2-3 longer term research and teaching visits to the host university. The total duration of the visits is expected to be 9-12 months, distributed flexibly based on mutual agreement between the host university and the candidate over the three-year period 2026-2028. The available state-of-the-art research infrastructure supports the full spectrum of activities, from fundamental scientific inquiry to application-oriented and industrially relevant research and development. For the selected candidates, office space during visits, as well as the standard office facilities (e.g., computer facilities, university e-mail, access to information services) will be provided. The travel costs to and from Finland, as directly related to the Chair of Excellence, are reimbursed according to the real costs (economy class) but up to EUR 5 000/year included in the total award. Selection Committee The selection committee includes ResQ Management Group and other expert representatives from InstituteQ Management Team where relevant. Pre-screening and final evaluation of applications are carried out by the ResQ (Research and Infrastructures) working group. The selection process is monitored by the InstituteQ Management Team. The Role and the Department Based within Research and Innovation Services, you will play a key role in the financial administration of postgraduate research studentships across Durham. You'll work closely with the newly launching Doctoral School, academic departments, and other central departments (for example Student Immigration and Funding Service, HR/Payroll) to support our research training programmes. You'll specialise in the post-award management of Training Grants, managing their financial lifecycle from initial allocation through to final reconciliation. This includes coordinating matched and commercial funding with external partners. You'll develop expertise in funder financial regulations whilst helping to establish processes for Durham's new Doctoral School. Key Responsibilities Financial Management & Reporting Deliver comprehensive financial management for UKRI training grants (AHRC, ESRC, EPSRC, etc.) and non-UKRI studentships (Leverhulme, Wellcome Trust, commercial sponsors) Authorise stipend, fee, and salary payments in accordance with funder terms and conditions Manage grant reconciliations, ensuring accurate financial data for funder reports, final claims, and partner reporting Prepare and submit financial reports, support annual returns, and provide data for grant monitoring and audits Manage invoicing for commercial sponsors and lead partners, ensuring timely recovery of funds Set up and maintain project codes, student codes, workpackages, and purchase orders for Training Grant consortia Compliance & Data Management Provide guidance on funder financial rules and budgetary requirements Ensure full compliance with funder financial regulations and University financial procedures Track studentship quotas against funding codes for accurate external reporting Maintain accurate financial records and data integrity across multiple systems Match Funding & External Partnerships Support the translation of planned match commitments into formal external contracts (e.g., converting cash match for Centres for Doctoral Training into contract requests with appropriate financial and project details) Track University studentship match funding commitments, working to convert internal contributions into external partner funding where feasible Coordinate financial setup for industry co-funded studentships (e.g., IDLA arrangements) Provide financial information and guidance on funder regulations to support training grant competitions Planning & Stakeholder Engagement Plan, organise, and prioritise your workload autonomously, balancing operational demands with longer-term projects Build productive working relationships with the Doctoral School, academic departments, and central finance teams Provide clear management information and data analysis to the Doctoral School and Postgraduate Research (PGR) Faculty Leads Explain complex financial regulations to non-financial stakeholders in an accessible way Contribute to establishing effective financial processes as the Doctoral School launches Work collaboratively, championing respect, inclusivity, equality, and diversity The base location for this role is Boldon House, our exciting new professional services hub.
