First impressions competition: 17 July 2008

This week’s competition, in which you have to identify a book from its opening sentence, is from a novel with riffs on military culture and free will:

"Everyone now knows how to find the meaning of life within himself."

The winner receives a £25 book voucher. The closing date is 23 July.

The winner of the last competition, who identified Kidnapped! by Robert Louis Stevenson, is Trevor Waddleton of Rothbury, Northumberland
