Six universities are to reveal how astronomers are able to explore the inner secrets of stars using sound. The project, named "Songs of the Stars - the real Music of the Spheres", is a collaborative venture led by the University of Central Lancashire and including the universities of Birmingham, Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam, Cambridge and Queen Mary, University of London. An exhibit at the Royal Society's Summer Science Exhibition features the research, which uses "astroseismology" techniques similar to ultrasound scans.
