This Mozambican voter was photographed by a British lecturer who was in the country last month to help monitor elections.

Andrew Russell, senior lecturer in politics at the University of Manchester, was part of the Commonwealth Observer Group appointed to ensure that elections were free, fair and transparent.

The group, made up of politicians, staff of non-governmental organisations and journalists, spoke to local people and civic groups about their voting experiences.

Throughout his time in the country, Dr Russell photographed and blogged about what he found. "It has been a fascinating experience," he said. "The queues to vote in the boiling hot temperature were something to behold."
