Brunel University of London, founded in 1966, is a university located in Uxbridge, London, UK. It was named after the Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel and in 2016, Brunel celebrated 50 years as a university.

The university is organised into three colleges – engineering, design and physical sciences; business, arts and social sciences; and health, medicine and life sciences.

It has five major research institutes – Communities and Society; Digital Futures; Energy Futures; Health, Medicine and Environments; and Materials and Manufacturing. It offers degrees in over 40 subject areas.

Brunel opened its Medical School in 2022, located at the heart of the campus close to all the main student amenities. It features state-of-the art learning and teaching facilities including: an anatomy centre; two clinical skills laboratories; a communications skills centre; two simulated hospital wards; as well social space for students and a student support office.

Brunel is a campus-based university, meaning students are never more than 10 minutes away from halls of residence, social and sports facilities, lecture theatres, or the library. With over 4,500 rooms on campus, Brunel guarantees accommodation for all first year students (terms and conditions apply). The facilities on campus include specialist laboratories for electronic imaging, bioprocessing and experimental techniques; flight, driving and train simulators; a 3D body scanner; an immersive ‘planetarium’ dome; visual effects/green room and a library with over 300,000 books which is open 24/7 during term time.

About the area The School of Human Sciences is a large multi-disciplinary School that makes a significant contribution to teaching and research in the Physiology discipline. The School is ranked 30th in the world in the subject area of ‘Anatomy and Physiology’ (QS). Core units within the Physiology major cover the fundamentals of various biological systems (e.g., nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, reproductive and gastrointestinal) and cellular function, as well as more applied science - exercise physiology, concepts of clinical and nutritional physiology, experimental methodology, and environmental physiology. Physiology teaching also extends to other majors within the School, including Neuroscience, Exercise and Health, and Sports Science, and into other Schools that facilitate the education of pre-clinical students. The group participates in a range of international collaborative projects aimed at fostering multidisciplinary cooperation and contributing to evidence-based decision-making in public health and disease prevention. In addition, the group is actively involved in teaching undergraduate and graduate students. The group is coordinated by Prof. Hynek Pikhart and Prof. Martin Bobak. Who We Are Looking For The research team is seeking a highly-motivated postdoc/researcher to collaborate on ongoing projects focused on evaluating potential links between the exposome and health outcomes (e.g., incidence or mortality of cancer, cardiovascular, or respiratory diseases). The post holder will focus on one or more of the following areas: Cancer Epidemiology – investigating environmental, psychosocial, and social exposures in relation to common cancers, including ecological, cohort or multi-level analyses, using a range of data (e.g. registers, spatial data, biomarkers of health effects, phenotype, GWAS and other -omics data). The SIPROME project investigates how professions and the socio-environmental and geographical situatedness of work environments in the ancient Roman Empire contributed to the spatial spread of ancient cults. Using computational methods, the project examines how the occupational risks faced by inhabitants of the Roman Empire influenced their choice of preferred cults. The main methods used in the project include spatial analysis, predictive modelling, statistics, and the analysis of geocoded data, especially of epigraphic and archaeological origin. MAIN JOB CONTENT Framework Conducting research in cooperation with the project team. Publishing research results in academic journals and disseminating ongoing research findings at conferences and other public events. Independent work as well as collaboration with other members of the project team. Content of the research activity: Mathematical modeling and statistical data analysis. Evaluating data as potential predictors explaining the spatial distribution of archaeological or epigraphic finds (e.g., analysis of variance, correlation, regression, maximum entropy models). His work lies at the intersection between the humanities and the cognitive and behavioural sciences, combining laboratory experiments with field studies to investigate how the human mind creates cultural niches and functions in them.
