University of Portsmouth - Lifeline for ghosts of digital past

Researchers at the University of Portsmouth are taking part in a project to preserve rapidly vanishing technology and cultural information about the first digital-age generation. The team is helping to build the world's first general-purpose emulator, software that can recognise and play all previous types of computer file, from 1970s Space Invaders games to 3in floppy disks. Computer historians David Anderson and Janet Delve, and computer games expert Dan Pinchbeck, are partners in the EUR4.02 million (£3.6 million) Europe-wide attempt to save digital files.
