Lord Coe, the double Olympic gold medallist, has opened world-class sports facilities at the University of Ulster, which will be available to UK teams training for the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics. Lord Coe said that Ulster's new £20 million sports centre was "a hugely exciting opportunity" that would take a lead in Northern Ireland's effort to encourage people to take part in sport at all levels. The centre, jointly funded by the university and Sport Northern Ireland's Lottery Fund, also houses the Sports Institute Northern Ireland. Richard Barnett, Ulster's vice-chancellor, said the university's aim was to become the leading institution for sport on the island of Ireland.
