This position will focus on the design, implementation, and evaluation of energy-saving interventions and technologies within a 300-home pilot, ensuring that research activities align with project objectives, regulatory frameworks, and pathways for real-world impact and scalability.   The Postdoctoral Researcher will assist with the technical research agenda, contributing expertise in energy systems, data analysis, and performance evaluation. They will contribute to the integration of hardware and software components from a research perspective, ensuring high-quality data collection, rigorous analysis, and evidence-based assessment of energy savings, user behaviour, and system performance.   Working closely with the Lead Technology Manager and the rest of the technical team, the Postdoctoral Researcher will support cross-disciplinary coordination and translate research findings into actionable insights, publications, and recommendations that inform both policy and future commercial or deployment opportunities. The role also involves engaging with project stakeholders and contributing to reports, academic outputs, and dissemination activities. The Nonlinear Systems and Control group is seeking a talented and ambitious Postdoctoral Researcher to develop machine learning-enabled approaches for predictive modelling and state estimation for fundamental applications within physical sciences. Your role The main research responsibilities involve building cutting edge machine learning techniques for sequential data modelling, including Physics-informed Machine Learning and Koopman Operator-based representation framework, towards building interpretable predictive models for complex multi-physics dynamical systems as well as towards designing observer-based state estimators from output timeseries data measurements. The research also involves development of uncertainty quantification techniques for the learnt models. You will also have opportunities to contribute to open-source computational tools and datasets, teach master-level courses, and advise doctoral students. You will closely collaborate with Prof. Mari Lundström’s group as well as industry partners and leading research institutions within the Nordics and the EU. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to participate in multidisciplinary initiatives within the Aalto House of AI. Your experience You have a recent doctoral degree in electrical engineering, control engineering, computer science, applied mathematics or a related field. Programming proficiency in Python is required, and hands-on experience with ML libraries such as PyTorch is expected. Theoretical understanding and experience with multi-physics modelling of electrochemical processes can be a plus. We value candidates who are collaborative team players, intellectually curious, and open to exploring new research directions. A track record of publications in recognised journals and conferences in the field is expected. Research assistant positions at the International Business Unit at Aalto University School of Business What would I do as a research assistant? You would be working with the faculty on academic research projects, teaching related tasks and assignments about societal impact. Potential tasks include data collection and analysis, conducting literature reviews, statistical analyses, research interviews, and any other research tasks. The topics you may work on are varied and broad, such as headquarters (re)locations, diversity, languages in organizations, sustainability, human resources, and international entrepreneurship. We have a need for a few research assistants. The selected research assistants are expected to start either in May or latest in June, and continue throughout the summer and, if possible, stay with the faculty throughout the whole academic year. There is a possibility to work full time or part-time, with flexibility based on mutual preferences. What’s in it for me? As a member of our community, you will have the opportunity to widen your perspectives on various international business topics as well as familiarize yourself with an academic career and learn research skills on the job. These skills will not only be helpful in your Master’s thesis but are also in demand in many professions outside of academia.
