About the University of Burgos

Basic information and contact details for the University of Burgos

institution
The University of Burgos is a public university located in the city of Burgos, Spain and was established on May 26th 1994. The school offers about 30 different undergraduate degrees and more than 20 different PhD programmes. Along with the undergraduate and PHD courses, the university also offers a variety of master’s and other graduate courses. While the university was only formed in 1994, its history can be traced back to the University of Valladolid which can trace its roots to 1241. Since its segregation from Valladolid, Burgos has steadily developed into one of Spain’s most respected universities. The university’s many students are spread over two campuses: San Amaro in the west of Burgos and Rio Vena in the north of the city. Along with its two campuses the university has two other facilities: the Hospital de la Conception, which is situated south of the centre of the city; and a residential/educational complex known as Miguel Delibes which is located just north of the city in the Valley of Sedano. While this complex is owned by the university, it is also open to the public. Each of the school's five academic centres (law, sciences, humanities and arts, business and economics, and the polytechnic school) has its own separate library. One of the most striking parts of the campus is the proto-gothic Hospital Del Rey which dates back to 1195, having been founded by King Alfonso VIII. The hospital was built during the Renaissance and retains some of the historic design details of the medieval hospital, such as the pillars of the old church.
