First established in 1997 by royal decree, Al-Balqa Applied University is a state-sponsored university spread over all Jordanian governorates with its main campus located in the Jordanian city of Salt. Al-Balqa Applied University offers a large number of academic programs at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level. The central campus is located in Salt city which is home to a number of important cultural and historical sites, dating back as far as the Roman, Byzantine and Mameluk periods. In addition to Salt’s own historic importance, the city is a 20-minute drive from the world’s lowest point, the Dead Sea, and is a short distance from the holy baptism site of Jesus Christ along the east bank of the Jordan River. On a sunny day, Salt offers a breath-taking view of the holy city of Jerusalem. In addition to Al-Salt’s prime location, Al-Balqa’s affiliate colleges across the kingdom also offer quality education and a unique opportunity to explore the richness of Jordan’s sites. Aqaba University College, located in Jordan’s most southern region, and only port, for example, offers both maritime transport technology programs and a chance to explore the coastal city of Aqaba, while Shoubak Agricultural College neighbors the spectacular Dana Biosphere Reserve, and Ma'an College is a short distance from the mesmerizing Wadi Rum and the world’s seventh wonders, the rose-red city of Petra. The primary responsibility of this role is to deliver on an academic research project funded by MPA, where you will be part of the research team under the project titled: HarbourCraftSafe: Fire Resilinet Battery Room Design for Next-Gen Electric Habour. The project is in collaboration with two local industry collaborators. Under this job title, you will develop a CFD modelling platform to evaluate the combustion, flammable and toxic gases emission and dispersion characteristics resulted from battery fires/thermal runaway in the battery room and beyond, considering the various common battery chemistries in eHC and atmospheric conditions. You will also need to experimentally characterise the heat release rate (HRR), flammable and toxic gases emissions of various types of batteries potentially deployed in eHC through reduced scale testing. Lastly, you will also need to evaluate the various gas monitoring sensors performance in detecting the battery gas releases for remote monitoring and early detection, and evaluate the potential fire suppression strategies on battery fires. Job Responsibilities:  Participate in and manage the research project with Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI and the research team members to ensure all project deliverables are met. Undertake these responsibilities in the project: i. Assists in co-supervision of final year projects (FYP) or capstone projects students under the Project PI. ii. Meeting the deliverables by carrying out the computational simulations and experimental studies planned for under the scope of work of the projects within the timeframe to meet the deliverables. iii. Assists the PI in drafting of reports, conference proceedings and journal articles based on the outcome of the projects. iv. Prepares and shares fortnightly report of results from the computations with the PI. Carry out Risk Assessment, and ensure compliance with Work, Safety and Health Regulations. Coordinate procurement and liaison with vendors/suppliers. Work independently, as well as within a team, to ensure proper operation and maintenance of equipment. Job Requirements: Master or Ph.D (preferred) in Mechanical Engineering, Marine and Offshore Engineering or related fields. Strong knowledge and experience in battery fire simulation is high advantageous. Hands on experience on experimental studies Familiarity with CFD applications working on industrial related projects using high performance computing clusters would also be advantageous Strong foundation in Fluid Dynamics Strong prior experience in CFD – particularly in battery fire combustion and spread. Strong skills in turbulence modelling, CFD mesh generation in complex 3D geometries. Proficient in handling large data sets and the ability to analysis and interpret results. Experience in commercial CFD package such as ANSYS package and FDS is preferred. Candidate preferably should be familiar and have sufficient experience in using ANSYS FLUENT and FDS, Meshing tool and post-processing software. Able to work independently with strong data analytical skills, communication and interpersonal skills. Description The Center for Translational Medical Devices (CENTMED) at New York University Abu Dhabi seeks to recruit a Post-Doctoral Associate to contribute to the Surface Chemistry of Implants and Fabrication of Polymer Medical Devices. The successful applicant will collaborate with faculty and researchers at CENTMED to enhance the surface chemistry of implant materials, improving biocompatibility and osteointegration. This will involve surface modification of implants through methods such as plasma treatment, silanization, and the application of specialty coatings to impart corrosion resistance. Additionally, the candidate will develop polymeric lubricious coatings for catheters to minimize injury to blood vessels during the trans-catheterization process. They will characterize the surface modifications of implants using microscopy techniques, including Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). The candidate will also map the nanomechanical properties of implant surfaces, assessing factors such as adhesion, friction, Young’s modulus, and surface free energy using AFM. The ideal candidate will bring experience in developing polymeric medical devices by identifying unmet clinical needs through interactions with clinicians, designing and developing medical devices, and fabricating medical device prototypes. Furthermore, the candidate should have experience in polymer processing techniques, including filament extrusion, compression molding, injection molding, and fused deposition modeling. This position requires the preparation of ISO/ASTM test specimens for mechanical (tensile and flexural) testing of polymers and composites using a Universal Testing Machine (UTM). The candidate will also estimate the glass transition temperature of polymers and composite materials through Dynamic Mechanical Analysis and develop osteoconductive polymeric implants for skull base surgery. Furthermore, the candidate will be involved in quantifying the adsorption of biomolecules on polymeric coatings using Quartz Crystal Microbalance with dissipation monitoring to model plaque build-up in coronary blood vessels. Other responsibilities include developing orthotic assistive devices from sustainable polymers and composites and co-developing medical devices with industry partners. The candidate will also assist in filing intellectual property rights related to medical device innovations. In addition to experimental work, the candidate will collaborate with CENTMED staff and leadership to prepare technology documentation and facilitate the translation of innovations to industry.
