The University of Nottingham is a public research university in the UK city of Nottingham.

The city’s first civil college opened in 1881 and its foundation stone was laid by the then Prime Minister, WE Gladstone.

By 1928 it had outgrown its original building and moved to what is today the university’s main campus. It wasn’t until 1948 that the college was awarded the Royal Charter, allowing it to officially become the University of Nottingham and award degrees in its own name.

Since its inception, the university has emphasised innovation. In 1970 it founded the UK’s first 20th century Medical School, and in 1995 the School of Nursing – a result of the university merging with the Mid-Trent College of Nursing and Midwifery.

In 2000 the university opened a campus in Malaysia. Five years later it opened another, a new purpose-built park campus near Kuala Lumpur. In 2006, Nottingham became the first foreign university to be invited to establish an independent campus in Ningbo, China, a historic city close to Shanghai.

Worldwide, the university has a student cohort of over 40,000 who between them represent more than 150 countries. Through its various study abroad programmes, most students have the opportunity to study overseas as part of their degree, in countries that include Sweden, Mexico, Japan, New Zealand and the US. 

Over the years, the University of Nottingham has taught a number of outstanding students who have gone on to become Nobel prize winners, leading scientists, politicians, novelists and Olympic gold medallists. They include the novelist DH Lawrence, the sixth Prime Minister of Malaysia Dato Seri Najib Razak, and former head of the secret intelligence service Sir John Sawers.

Today, the university is home to five faculties: Arts, Medicine and Health Sciences, Science, Engineering and Social Sciences.

Nottingham is known for having a vibrant social scene and is home to a students’ union that supports an eclectic range of organisations, societies, student groups, campaigns and community projects.

Its motto translates into English as ‘A city is built on wisdom.’

Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR) is a multi- and interdisciplinary research unit based in physics, chemistry, meteorology, forest sciences, environmental sciences and social sciences in the University of Helsinki. INAR aims to strengthen the internationally leading, integrated multidisciplinary research and education environment for atmospheric and Earth system science and to feed in scientific results for the national and international environment and climate policy. It performs multiscale research from molecular to global scale and focuses on climate change, air quality, biogeochemical cycles and ecosystem processes. INAR has INAR Finland Network partners in Finnish Meteorological Institute, University of Eastern Finland and Tampere University of Technology.  Faculty of Science invites applications for   POST-DOCTORAL AND DOCTORAL RESEARCHERS TO THE ORCTOOL PROJECT    Starting spring 2026 for a full-time fixed-term contract of two to four years depending on the position. The hired researchers will work as part of the computational aerosol group at INAR. The computational aerosol physics group uses computational and theoretical methods to understand cluster and particle formation for atmospherically relevant molecules.   ORCTOOL (Organic Cluster Tools) aims to create a toolbox for understanding and cost-effectively predicting the rate of massively multicomponent organic, or organic-enhanced, new-particle formation in the atmosphere. We will combine our molecular-level model development  with machine learning and artificial intelligence methods, targeted validation experiments. The project is funded by The Research Council of Finland. In the first stages of the project the research tasks include test and extend group contribution methods for predicting aerosol-relevant bulk properties such as pure-compound saturation vapor pressures develop suitable representations (descriptors) for both the clusters and their building blocks to facilitate efficient use of machine learning method for predicting cluster stabilities test, validate, and extend the cluster-of-functional-groups approach to predict whether and how strongly the organic vapour enhances clustering of driven by inorganic molecules model cluster formation in ‘clean’ engine exhaust driven by lubricants and their additives, involving also nitric acid formed from emitted NOX,   sulphuric acid as well as catalyst-created ammonia. The applicant should: Hold a doctoral or master degree in relevant field such as physics or  chemistry; Have good programming skills and interest in code development;  Have excellent skills in spoken and written English;   Research interests close to the project scope and prior experience of computational physics and/or chemistry as well as machine learning/artificial intelligence are a merit.  The appointee for the doctoral researcher position should either already have the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki by the start of the appointment or apply for the right and obtain it within the trial period of six months of their appointment. About us  The appointee will provide academic leadership for the early-phase and experimental medicine trial portfolio in the King’s Clinical Trials Unit (KCTU), the UKCRC registered CTU within King’s College London and Partner Trusts in King’s Health Partners. KCTU supports trials in all disease areas with specialist strength in mental health, neuroscience, rheumatology, transplantation and ophthalmology. The KCTU Academic Director is Professor Richard Emsley. The appointee will support the Academic Director to promote and develop KCTU’s work in this area both within King’s and externally. On appointment you will be affiliated with the Department of Biostatistics and Health Informatics in the School of Mental Health and Psychological Sciences at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience. About the role  The King’s Clinical Trials Unit (KCTU) is seeking to appoint a leading academic to the role of Professor of Early Phase Clinical Trial Statistics. This senior position provides an outstanding opportunity to lead and grow methodological and applied research in early phase clinical trials, particularly those involving novel therapies, biomarkers, and adaptive designs. You will join a world-class academic environment within King’s Clinical Trials Unit working with academics in the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience and the Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine. You will work collaboratively with clinical and translational researchers, trialists, statisticians, and industry partners to deliver high-quality, innovative early phase trials in priority health areas. Collaborate with clinicians and scientists to design, analyse, and report early phase trials across a range of clinical specialties. Contribute to the strategic direction and development of the King’s Clinical Trials Unit. Secure external funding from NIHR, MRC, UKRI, industry, and charitable sources. Supervise and mentor early career researchers and PhD students. Contribute to postgraduate education in clinical trials methodology. About you To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience: Essential criteria PhD or equivalent in medical statistics, biostatistics, or a related quantitative discipline. Proven track record of leading the statistical design and analysis of early phase clinical trials. Extensive publication record in peer-reviewed journals relevant to early phase methodology and applications. Demonstrable success in attracting significant external research funding.
