About Berry College

Basic information and contact details for Berry College

institution

Berry College is a privately run liberal arts college in north west Georgia, USA. The college was founded in 1902 by Martha Berry who started educating the local children with bible stories. By 1902 she had decided to use land inherited from her father to found the Boys’ Industrial School with the aim of lifting local people out of poverty. In 1909 a girls school was added, and Berry became an accredited college in 1926.

Due to Martha Berry’s tireless fundraising efforts the college received large donations of funds and land, as many as 30,000 acres. This land, covering fields, forests and a mountain mean that Berry boasts the largest contiguous college campus in the USA.

Berry has several undergraduate degree programs offering qualifications in arts and social sciences, humanities and the sciences. There are also undergraduate and masters courses available in business and teacher training. The college comprises the schools of business, education, humanities, arts and sciences and the school of mathematical and natural sciences. The college currently has a couple of  thousand students, many of them from in-state, but despite this there are around 20 different foreign countries represented within the Berry student body.

The scenic campus and beautiful old buildings are often used for shooting movies and the campus has endless opportunities for hiking, camping and hunting. The portion of the campus containing the college’s English Gothic style academic buildings is designated as a wildlife refuge. There is also an extensive sports and leisure complex offering students facilities to train and relax in between classes.
