Founded in 1833, the University of Zurich (UZH) was the first university in Europe to be established by a democratic government rather than a monarch or the church.
Now the largest university in Switzerland, it is home to 26,000 students and comprises seven faculties offering over 100 degree programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
UZH is a member of the League of European Research Universities, placing it among Europe’s most prestigious research institutions, with a particularly strong reputation in the fields of medicine, immunology, biology, genetics, neuroscience and economics.
Although its undergraduate degrees are mainly taught in Swiss Standard German, Masters’ courses are all taught in English.
The university maintains active links with the community and possesses an ethos that states all knowledge and research should be shared with the public. Consequently, the general public is granted access to its twelve museums and numerous libraries, and many of the university’s research findings are made accessible in the form of public lectures and panel discussions.
UZH also has close collaborations with other universities in Switzerland, including the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, and across Europe.
The institution has a long tradition of forward-thinking and progressive policies. It was an early pioneer for women’s rights in education, for example, and was the first university in the German-speaking world to award a doctorate to a female student.
It also boasts associations with 12 Nobel Laureates, including Albert Einstein and Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, who first detected X-rays.
Zurich is a major city for business and finance, as well as culture - home to myriad museums, art galleries, theatres and orchestras. In 2015, the Economist Intelligence Unit's Global Liveability Ranking placed Zürich among the top ten most liveable cities in the world.
All three of the university’s campuses are located near the city centre and are easily accessible by public transport.

As a University of Applied Learning, SIT works closely with industry in our research pursuits. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT. The Research Engineer (Modelling and Simulation) will support a one-year applied research project and evaluate a mobile DC microgrid for military tactical applications. The role involves developing detailed power system models in ETAP and MATLAB/Simulink, conducting performance and reliability simulations, and analysing the behaviour of solar PV, BESS, diesel generators, and DC distribution systems. The engineer will also document modelling assumptions, prepare technical reports, support procurement and project operations, and assist in supervising student researchers. This position is ideal for candidates with strong grounding in power system modelling, microgrid technologies, and simulation-based research. Key Responsibilities Participate in and manage the research project with the PI, Co-PI, and team to design a robust mobile DC microgrid for military operations. Develop detailed simulation models simulation models in ETAP and MATLAB/Simulink for solar PV arrays, battery energy storage systems (BESS), vehicle-based deployable storage, diesel generator sets and rectifiers, DC distribution bus and electrical loads. Implement and carry out simulation studies to analyse system performance under various operating conditions such as extreme weather, load variation, equipment failure and deployment constraints. Perform load flow, transient stability, reliability, and efficiency studies to evaluate microgrid architecture options. Support the integration of various generation assets into a cohesive DC microgrid model. Document modelling assumptions, system parameters, simulation results, and engineering insights for final reporting. Prepare simulation diagrams, charts, and technical specifications for submission. Assist with procurement of software licences and technical equipment. Conduct Risk Assessments and ensure compliance with WSH regulations. Support supervision of capstone project students involved in the project. Work independently and collaboratively to maintain research software and project tools. To communicate and liaise with any internal and external stakeholders to ensure project deliverables are met. Any other ad-hoc duties assigned. Job Requirements Bachelor’s degree or above in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, or a related field from a recognised university. Knowledge and experience in modelling and simulation of microgrids or power systems using ETAP and/or MATLAB/Simulink. Experience in distributed energy resources (DERs), PV, BESS, diesel gensets, or DC microgrids is highly advantageous. Familiarity with energy management systems, microgrid control strategies, or predictive/dynamic control will be an advantage. The post of Inkfish Principal Statistician and Methodological Lead in Digital Trials on the EMBRACE study represents an exceptional opportunity for an internationally recognised expert in statistics with a strong track record in methodological leadership in digital trials to contribute to a globally pioneering programme focused on maternal and early childhood health. The post holder will serve as the Principal Statistician and Methodological Lead in Digital Trials for the EMBRACE programme, providing strategic direction and scientific leadership across the design, analysis, and interpretation of both observational and interventional studies, with a particular emphasis on digital and AI-enabled trials. The post demands strong expertise in implementing methodological frameworks and in clinical epidemiology. A central responsibility will be to lead protocol design, develop methodological frameworks, and oversee statistical analyses, in alignment with regulatory, ethical, and governance frameworks relevant to digital health research and AI-enabled studies (e.g. GDPR, GCP, and AI ethics). The post holder will direct core methodological workstreams within the EMBRACE consortium, and collaborate closely with global partners in academia, healthcare, and industry to drive innovation and maximise translational impact. The post holder is required to hold a PhD degree in statistics, biostatistics, epidemiology, health data science, or other closely related disciplines.
