Pennsylvania State University is one of the “Public Ivies”: a publicly funded institution that is thought to provide a standard of education comparable to that offered by the elite Ivy League.

Penn State is one of the largest universities in the US.

It runs more than 275 undergraduate degree programmes as well as postgraduate qualifications, while conducting more than $1.44 billion-worth of research every year.

The majority of students are based on the main campus, University Park, located in the centre of the state, but many students begin their studies on another campus before transferring to the main site.

The university has the multi-location Penn State Dickinson Law, as well as the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, which treats more than 1 million patients every year.

The institution also operates Penn State World Campus, allowing students from around the world to study for the university’s qualifications online.

All this is a far cry from Penn State’s humble beginnings in 1855, when it was founded as the Farmers’ High School of Pennsylvania.

The institution gradually diversified its offering but did not gain university status in 1953, a move which was followed by a tripling of student numbers.

The university’s mascot is the Nittany Lion – referring to the mountain lions which are thought to have once roamed nearby Mount Nittany – and alumni take the same name.

Penn State is also home to the world’s largest student-run fundraising event, the Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, which sees dancers strut their stuff around the clock over the course of a weekend, raising millions of dollars for charity.

The Professional Officers Division (POD) houses a centralised pool of academic staff under the Professional Officers scheme. Professional Officers bring specialised and deep technical expertise developed through extensive industry experience. They provide a critical industry perspective to student learning and applied research, complementing the academic expertise of faculty by translating industry practices and real-world applications into the curriculum. SIT is strengthening its capabilities in Aerospace Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO), building a cohort of faculty who are experienced in solving real-world aerospace maintenance challenges through applied research and innovation. Focus areas for Aerospace MRO include: Smart Maintenance & Predictive Diagnostics Digital Twins & Lifecycle Engineering Robotics & Autonomous Inspection Systems Composite Structures Inspection & Repair Advanced Repair Technologies (e.g. Additive Manufacturing) Responsibilities: Design, develop, and teach laboratory sessions and practice-based modules in Aerospace MRO and related areas. Lead or co-lead innovative applied research and industry collaboration projects with industry partners and government agencies. Secure and manage research grants to support applied research initiatives. Supervise and mentor students in applied research projects, Capstone Projects, and the Integrated Work Study Programme (IWSP). Manage laboratory facilities, equipment, and technical resources to support academic programmes and applied research activities. Ensure compliance with laboratory safety policies, procedures, and best practices. Contribute to the development of applied Aerospace MRO capabilities, learning resources, and industry-relevant curriculum support. Work closely with faculty and internal stakeholders to drive teaching, applied research, and innovation initiatives outcomes. Qualifications: A good Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline. Strong track record in Aerospace MRO, aerospace systems, or related applied research/industry practice At least 7 years of relevant industry experience, preferably in a technical role within an organisation driving research and/or innovation outcomes Strong technical expertise in one or more of the following areas: Predictive Maintenance & Prognostics (PHM) Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) and NDT/NDI Digital Twins and physics-informed modelling Aerospace robotics and autonomous inspection systems Composite materials, damage detection, and repair Additive manufacturing for aerospace repair (flight-certified applications) Aircraft systems, gas turbine maintenance, or MRO best practices Circular economy and sustainable aerospace maintenance Experience Applying Expertise to one or more of the following: Commercial or military Aerospace MRO operations Smart hangar / digital MRO transformation initiatives AI-enabled inspection and diagnostics systems Robotics deployment in maintenance environments Lifecycle management of composite aircraft structures Industry-scale maintenance optimisation and downtime reduction Demonstrated interest and capability in supporting research and academic project work, with the ability to develop software solutions to technical problems. Your personal sphere of influence: You will join the Department of Environmental Geosciences (EDGE) at the Centre for Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science (CeMESS) to investigate p phenylenediamine (PPD) tire antioxidants and their quinone transformation products (PPD Qs). The project you will be working on studies tire antioxidant chemicals (PPDs) and their quinone products (PPD‑Qs) released by tire and road wear, and investigates how their properties affect transport across cell membranes, binding to blood proteins, and effects on human cells. The objectives are to measure passive transport and distribution (including plasma protein and membrane lipid binding); to quantify cytotoxicity in human intestinal and lung cell models; and to determine whether the observed effects fit baseline (narcosis) toxicity or reflect specific mechanism. Using a set of PPDs and PPD‑Qs, the work links in vitro effect levels to plausible human exposures and compares current antiozonants with potential replacements. Your future tasks: You actively participate in research, teaching, and administration, which means that you will: Plan and execute experiments to quantify passive transport, membrane partitioning, and plasma protein binding for selected PPDs and PPD Qs, ensuring appropriate test conditions and quality control. Generate concentration–response data in intestinal and lung cell models to compare toxicity across ingestion  and inhalation relevant tissues. Perform mechanistic studies to differentiate baseline toxicity from specific mode of toxic action. Analyze how lipophilicity and electrophilicity relate to transport, binding, and cellular outcomes. Manage data analysis and documentation; contribute to manuscripts and presentations. Progress your dissertation; contribute to teaching and administrative tasks; supervise undergraduate/master’s students as appropriate. This is part of your personality: M.Sc. in toxicology, environmental chemistry, environmental sciences, or a related field. Excellent written and spoken English (at least level C1). Laboratory experience. Experience with LC-MS/MS. Ability to perform concentration–response testing and statistical analyses. Familiarity with cell culturing, membrane transport assays, and/or protein binding is an advantage. Strong interest in membrane-molecule interactions and mechanistic toxicology; motivation to link physicochemical properties to biological effects. We are seeking a talented and motivated Research Fellow to join our Experimental Fluid Mechanics team!  You will work under the supervision of Prof. Bharathram Ganapathisubramani, collaborating with PhD students and other postdoctoral researchers within the group.  Key responsibilities include: Carry our measurements of turbulent flows under realistic conditions (effects of roughness, pressure gradient, surface textures etc) Develop relevant new diagnostic techniques to access new aspects of the flow Analyse data and develop new data-driven models that can be used for predictions Publish and present findings in relevant journals/conferences.  You should hold a PhD (or equivalent experience) in Aerodynamics or Fluid Mechanics.
