Israeli scientists could benefit from the European Union's Sixth Framework Programme after an association agreement was put to ministers for approval.

The deal would allow research teams from Israel to join collaborative projects funded on the same basis as academics in EU states.

But they will be barred from joint nuclear research.

Israel will help fund the programme, although a final figure has yet to be set.
