Aberdeen honours Gaelic guru Gillies

Norman Gillies, director of Scotland's only Gaelic college, has been appointed to an honorary chair in contemporary Highland studies at Aberdeen University.

Dr Gillies has been a key figure in the Gaelic revival. He was appointed secretary of Sabhal Mor Ostaig on Skye in 1983, when it took in its first full-time students, and he has been director since 1988. Sabhal Mor is part of the UHI Millennium Institute federation. It attracts some 500 students annually for short courses in Gaelic.
